Frankenstein was written by Mary Shelley and published in 1818.
At the age of 16, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley gave birth to a child who lived only 11 days. Two years later, pregnant again, she began writing "Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus." When she finished, she was expected her 3rd baby. These experiences of creation, loss, and remorse infuse her depiction of the scientist Victor Frankenstein, who was driven to explore the connection between life and death.
The scientist reanimates a being made from the parts of the dead. The 8-foot-tall creature escapes and later Frankenstein believes it murdered his brother. Tracking it down, Frankenstein engages the monster in conversation. Would it placate the misanthropic monster if Frankenstein created a bride for him?
Although the psychological complexity of the creature was flattened in the 1931 film (which also transposed the creator's name upon his creation), Boris Karloff's depiction of the monster would become the dominant version etched in 20th century popular culture. This lumbering, nearly invulnerable beast had unearthly physical strength. Frankenstein's progeny was a reanimated visage of doom who became a destructive villain. Its limited vocabulary, stiff gait, and overpowering force epitomized a nightmare come to life.
