Cthulhu is a leader of the Old Ones - cosmic entities that came from outer space to inhabit the earth before the rise of humanity.

Author H.P. Lovecraft created this iconic beast in 1928. He wrote "The Call of Cthulhu," a short story published in Weird Tales, an American pulp magazine. Lovecraft may have picked "Cthulhu" to echo the ancient Greek word chthonic ("of the earth").

Lovecraft describes the creatures as "a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind." Its visage is so awesomely terrifying that it destroys a beholder's sanity. Hidden in a city beneath the Pacific Ocean, this being waits. One day it will awaken again to rule the world.
