note that surface specular highlights are a completely different phenomena than caustics

Since caustics work by refraction, for there to be a highlight, the light is subtracted from somewhere else, so the pattern of the shadows *must* be derived from the pattern of the highlights. Since you drew two different patterns, it looks like two different surfaces.

The way you did the additive lighting pattern is typical of caustics, which would be underwater. But the shadowing looks projected on a lower surface, meaning the highlights are the upper surface.
It looks like both the surface of water and the bottom of a pool at the same time.
