Description

Descendants of a starfish like ancestor which lurked in swamps which used electroreception and bio-electric discharges to hunt prey that got through a mass extinction event on par with the Great Dying, these aliens abandoned their solitary nature, refined their senses and modified their bio-electric cells from weapons to transmitters. First for simple mating displays, then as signals, then eventually through considerable refinement thought routines. In the end a new clade of creatures evolved which gradual moved towards a Eusocial Lifestyle with herds with specialized castes of workers, soldiers, farmers, signal routers and breeders who produced eggs. First they were nomadic, then they became more sedentary building large warrens and eventually they became adept tool users to increase their versatility. 1.5 to 2 meters tall and weighing in at 75 to 250 kilograms and with three arms and legs they rose.

At first the hives acted as city states, a central knot of structures surrounded by farmland and roads all governed by a singular group intelligence. Often they traded, often they warred and they formed and broke alliances. The powerful group minds developed increasingly sophisticated tools. Unusually they developed an understanding of electricity well before that of most races, developing it as they were beginning to build water wheels. When your bodies have built in radio it is only natural a lot of questions would be asked earlier. With this knowledge they developed simple dynamo powered signal amplifiers for their antennae and latter more sophisticated systems. Eventually this led to a period of integration. Coalitions of colonies began to open up their barriers and fuse into singular entities during their industrial era.

For all of that some colonies resisted intergration into larger wholes and even some of the larger blocks feared forcible assimilation or extermination by their rivals. In the end their world was divided among three main entities with a few dozen smaller hold outs, each with ambitions of dominance. To achieve a long term victory, each of them set about building interstellar colony ships to seed new worlds with fragments of themselves. All of which came at a time of increased political instability on their world as the three great powers pushed each other further and further. Eventually they snapped and their home system was consumed in war. Some of the ark ships had already left in their centuries long voyages.
