Description

The Rebel Alliance's victory at the Battle of Endor was widely believed that this was a mortal blow for the Empire. There was still the bulk of the Imperial Navy but in the sudden power vacuum the Moffs and Admirals turned on each other, as well as a wave of new rebellions. The next decade would see the Empire's war machine wither due to the squabbles between Warlords and the rising New Republic. Eventually in 9 ABY a rough peace was established between the New Republic and a coalition of Ex-Imperial warlords known as the Empire in Exile with a few concentrated holdings amounting to about 17% of Imperial territory. It was generally hoped by the New Republic that this alliance would gradually break apart and could re-absorbed by the New Republic.

But beyond the Outer Rim in a secret base, a clone in a Bacta Tank stirred to and crawled out. After some tests, the restored Palpatine was recognized. Despite this, his forces were limited. A few Star Destroyers and smaller craft, a shipyard with a half-finished hulk, a single planet (latter known as Contingency) with about thirty million loyalists, a network of spies and a few experimental research labs. He could not take over by force, nor could he simply barge in and cease control of the Empire in Exile. To reconquer the galaxy, he'd need something new. Part of that would be completed in a decade with the completion of the World Devastator, which upon it's completion would allow Palpatine to rapidly build a war machine. But beyond that, Palpatine had an even more insidious plan ready.

Around 13 ABY, raids began to become more common throughout the unknown territories. Most of these at first were done by slavers: vile but neither unprecedented or strange in of themselves. Then as time went on, other raids were launched, but instead of rag-tag raiders there was something more menacing. Attacks by troopers clad in black armour with glowing which would attack without warning or mercy. They were generally quiet, but not silent. They might grunt in frustration or pain if wounded, occasionally they might cackle as one and on a few occasions they would speak clearly. But they would never give orders or communicate with themselves. They left few survivors, collected their dead and on those few occasions in which a raid was repulsed the figures inside said armour would disintegrate to ash.

Shortly after his Clone body's decantation Palpatine received a neural implant, built directly onto his cerebellum with nanodroids. This monitored his mental processes and could feed imput. Not long after, other humans would be subject to similar procedures though these were less expensive were installed surgically. Some of these were blank clones produced in facilities derived from Kaminoan technology, others were captives while a few were fanatical volunteers from the population of his contingency. Either way, the subject's memories were carefully erased, leaving little more than bare motor functions. Clone Troopers had bio-mechanical chips grown in their brains to compel them to follow. Stormtroopers were subject to various forms of indoctrination to insure compliance. But these poor souls would not only be blanked, but their brains would be networked with Palpatine's via a specially designed hyperwave network and would become parallel processors. A process which was reinforced through the Dark Side of the Force. From vast processing centres on Contingency would march out Nodetroopers and to face a Nodetrooper was to face the Emepror's minions but the Emperor himself.

The only disappointment Palpatine had with the project was a limitation on force abilities. His strength in the Force remained potent, but it was spread thin among millions of humans which mostly had very low midi-chlorians. At most, he could project Force Lightning through a couple of Nodetroopers at a time at most. Similarly Nodetroopers were often dependant on a network of hyper-comms to manage them. Even so, the Legions of Nodetroopers would play a major role in Palpatine's reclamation of the throne of the Empire in Exile and in the Imperial/Republic War. To all those that faced these forces in Battle, Nodetroopers were both a formidable foe and a horrifying glimpse of what the future might hold if the Galaxy fell to the Eternal Emperor.
