Description

Communications are essential to any military operation, be the battle be fought with sword, spear and bow in forest and hill or with railgun, torpedo and laser in space. Radio was and remains a critical tool, but has severe limitations on an interplanetary let alone interstellar scale due to the Speed of Light. The Hypercomm allowed for FTL communications, but the nature of the systems involved made them large cumbersome affairs, praticularly early in their development. As such it was fairly common for navies to field dedicated communication ships. This is especially so for the group entity Jade who needed not only to provide instructions and receive reports from her far flung fleets, but to help keep them integrated into themselves. She made several classes of Communications Ships for interplanetary integration, but her first interstellar communications ships was the An Unpleasant Call At 4 AM Born Of Alcohol (or UC4amBA for short) class LCS.

The An Unpleasant Call At 4 AM Born Of Alcohol class LCS was developed in tandem with the You Damn Kids Get Off My Lawn! class destroyer and most of the drive systems of the two classes are interchangeable to simplify logistics. The UC4amBA class differs from it's more marshal sister above that. It is 161.3 meters long and masses in at 10,500 tonnes. A decent percentage of it's mass is taken up by the central sphere containing a 2^15C Hypercomm transceiver with a four lightyear range, representing the most powerful mobile FTL communication system at Jade's disposal in her initial campaigns against the pirates. The UC4amBA class has a crew of some 40 spacers.

The function of the UC4amBA class was to serve as mobile localized hubs in the communication chain, relaying thoughts and information from the main body of Jade to her warfleets and back in conjunction with deep space stations and if the need arises forming chains. A standard squadron of four You Damn Kids Get Of My Law! class Destroyers would have a An Unpleasant Call At 4 AM Born Of Alcohol class LCS to network their shipminds together and to send their messages back further and faster than what could be done otherwise. To save on mass, the UC4amBA class ships has deleted the offensive weaponry, retaining eight point defense laser cannons. However these were cut back to four as Jade began to produce her first viable shield generators. Based off captured pirate units, these shield generators were basic affairs when compared to those employed by most pirates and were expensive to produce. As such, Jade made it a priority that her communications fleet be upgraded before anything else. The loss of a few warships would not be as crippling as the destruction of communications links.
