Description

The Confederated Republics is a loose state formed of about thirty city states united in trade and against the aggression of kingdoms to the North, South and West. While the Confederation maintains a navy and a small army and marine corps, most of it's fighting forces are raised by the city states. These include local militias and forces of cavalry raised from the landlords and wealthy merchants of the republic, but the main fighting force of the cities are Urban Regiments. Small but well drilled standing forces of infantry. Each City in the Republic takes pride in their Urban Regiments.

About one third of all soldiers in an urban regiment are Spitfirers armed with matchlock muskets. Confederation gunsmiths are among the most skilled in the world and their weapons are both lighter and more reliable than crappier ones made by royalists. The tactics of Urban Regiments involves lines of gunners backed by halberds and pikes for defense against cavalry as well as small numbers of close quarter soldiers armed with warpicks, cutlasses and hexagonal steel shields to best enemy infantry. But while they are not fully capable of fighting on their own, spitfirers can devestate enemy ranks. Plated cuirasses are still common for urban regiment soldiers, but as gunnery becomes more common among their enemies body armor has been deemed by some to be less essential. Helmets remain the usual headgear however, as you want to keep your brain safe when enemies get up close and personal.
