Chess, despite not being the sharpest tool in the shed, possesses an uncanny street-smart intuition that keeps him alive in a world that isn't kind to those of humble origins. His instincts are finely tuned after years spent navigating both the treacherous mines and criminal underbelly. Even when he can't pinpoint the exact danger, he acts on gut feeling and this has preserved his life where others have perished. Living on the edge for so long has led to his emotions being pushed aside, frayed and blunted having to prioritize survival and hard rationality. Where possible, Chess will always choose to options that cause the least harm to himself and secondly the least harm to anyone else. He has little notion of grandiosity and will cut losses where necessary to keep himself safe, which is also why he has so few scars to prove his experience in the underbelly. Few have the inclination to challenge someone as large as Chess but those that do will simply see him walk away.

Ianthe had only known him as a lawbreaker and felon, as she was one of the first guards to begin picking up on his illegal activities. He fell in love with her at first sight. Chester knew he was punching above his weight when he managed to get her to agree to go on a date. Although the attraction was strong, the couple faced major barriers; not only was Ianthe a ranked guard, she was also from a significant noble family. Chester never stopped fighting for them and the couple kept seeing each other, growing into a blossoming relationship before he proposed to her.
Alun
They are on a friendly basis, as Alun is a doctor that patches up his wounds no questions asked. They share similar tastes in music but don't have anything in common past that. Still, Chester tries to remain at least a little sociable with the one doctor that doesn't flat out refuse to treat a guy with his sort of reputation. Chester finds him unbearably naïve, but doesn't hold that against him.
Phaesto
Phaesto and Chester are at complete odds. Chester uses his role as a miner as a cover for less honest work and Phaesto is a lawful furnace keeper running a campaign against malpractice in the mines. As a result their vested interests clash directly and both hold negative views on each other. Whenever Chester gets the chance to give him utter hell, he jumps at the opportunity.
Kendra
Chester thinks it's cute that this young guard hates him, since he generally is overlooked by other guards as 'just another thug' while Kendra seems to take personal offense to the sight of him. Chester goes out of his way to tease or taunt her if he can afford to do so, under the guise of being friendly. He isn't cruel to her but his actions can be seen as bullying when they get into verbal fights.
Archenzha
He takes great precaution to stay the hell out of her sight. Chester knows that Archenzha is a friend of his wife but due to his history as a petty criminal and thug in the mines he wants to continue being known to her only through passing comments. He holds some respect for the head guard due to his wife's close relationship with her.

Niuquidd - A mysterious and tight-lipped employer to whom he acts as a bodyguard on their barely legal trips to the caverns and below. He's not quite sure what to make of the royal caeli, though the amount of coin he makes on one trip far outweighs any doubts he has about his employer's motives.
Queran - One of Chester's frequent employers, Queran utilizes Chester's skills to bully more money out of unwitting buyers. In turn, he also gets to pocket a nice share of the money. They actively avoid talking or meeting except for business, since both prefer their own company.
Oamine - Previous employer... parting under tragic circumstances. Chester once held warm feelings for this caeli but those days are long forgotten.
GD - Chester's relation with GD was no more than a brush in the wrong direction before very quickly stumbling out of a situation he would regret. While GD and Chester share respect for one another for each others' reputation and skills, Chester was not interested in getting too deep. He had to protect Ianthe first and foremost, so Chester now simply stays out of his way.
Backstory
Chester's early life was difficult from the start, as he was orphaned and unwanted by adopting families. There was speculation he might be part of a noble bloodline but he was excluded from social circles due to his brutish nature. His strong instincts and formidable physical strength became his tools for survival.
In a world that pushed him to be hardened and guarded, Chester learned to project an image that deterred others from crossing him. He became known as someone not to be trifled with, a reputation earned through necessity rather than choice. Behind this facade, however, lay a compassionate and gentle caeli who did not truly want to harm anyone.
As he grew into adulthood, he picked up jobs as a digger in the mines. His occupation as a low-class miner doesn't bother him; he was not above knocking someone out to make a point if anyone disrespected him. It was only a matter of time before Chester capitalized on his position underground, running shady business ventures disguised by the his role in the mines. While he did engage in legitimate mining work, he saw himself primarily as an opportunist, offering his brawn for a price to those seeking a bit of muscle for unsavoury tasks. He would sell his own tail if the price was right, though the line was drawn at jobs involving serious harm or murder.
Present Day
Since falling in love with Ianthe and starting a life with her, Chester's priorities shifted away from the criminal underworld and towards safeguarding the small slice of peace he's carved out. Ianthe's presence brought out the softer side of Chester, prompting him to let go of his more dubious activities. Although life is not all blissful domesticity and happiness, Chester cherishes his newfound purpose and continues to walk a fine line balancing his reputation and finances with risk to his new family.
