"your character remembers the name of the host of the tournaments and feels like he/she has heard that name before".... yeah, that always sounds like "do i really?"... or "you sure i know this person?" are the right answers to not get on the rails, it works a few times, but most of the times the GM just says "story triumphs rules" and your characters have to go along with it.
