Now Toby wasn't a very shy person exactly, though he wasn't the most well spoken ever, mostly due to the fact that people just told him to shut up if he spoke up his ideas. Meeting his best friend was the best thing to ever happen to him, so much so that the boy who usually told others secrets, kept Martyn's biggest one ever.
Martyn
It was raining, again. You stepped out into the world, leaving the green tent behind you. No way it could protect you from the rain now that there was a massive rip across the top. The only item you took with you was your favourite grey jumper to keep you warm. As you walked through the dirty forest, sticking close to the trees as to not get too wet in the downpour, you smelled a slight scent of burning wood... Sizzling met your ears and you brought your speed to a jog as you feared what the sound could be. As you entered a large clearing you saw a burning inferno, trees falling down as the smoke rose and the fire spread.
"Shit!" you shouted to yourself, what if someone was there?! Then you realised, a small, bright green tent, burning in the centre of the forest fire.
You knew where this trail lead, it lead to the kingdom of the saplings. Only the knights of the kingdom would venture down this path, and you occasionally when you went searching for berries and other food for you and your master. Well, they couldn't take it now, and the whole forest would burn down if you didn't do anything!
You ran over after getting over the initial shock and pulled buckets of water out of your backpack.
You rushed over, pouring the water behind you as you went, you needed a clear root back if your attempts didn't work.
As you entered the smoke filled tent you coughed and covered your mouth, a large emblem was the last thing left unsigned, hanging off the wall with a tree painted across it. As you watched, the fire spread to the bottom of the emblem and you had no other choice but to run out before the flaming top of the tent collapsed onto your head.
You ran over to the side of the clearing, retching as tears streamed down your face and clean air began to enter your lungs once more. You decided to turn and run to get help from your master, there's no way you could fight a forest fire on your own, you was just little old Toby. As you ran, you found your foot hitting something small, causing you to stumble and face-plant the floor. As you looked to what had caused this trip, you noticed a small box of matches... No, he wouldn't do such a thing...
Sitting up and slowly picking up the box, doom struck you. Oh no.
Harrison's fire-starters.
Why? Why would your master do such a thing?!
As you sat and tried to process what was happening, the fire slowly crackling away as if in slow motion, you heard a sound behind you...
You turned to see a flash of blonde hair rush behind the trees, going deeper into the woods.
Dropping the matches, you decided to follow, it could be the survivor of the fire, there was no-one in the tent after all.
Walking deeper into the woods, you fount yourself feeling guilty for leaving the fire crackling away, not even attempting to search for help. But, you was trying to save someone! Right? You didn't really know anymore and panick shook your body as fast as it could, you placed your hands to your head. "What have I done?!" you asked yourself "I have to go back there! I have to warn the sapling king!"
A spot of rain dropped onto your bare hands and thousands more followed, as you looked up to see where this sudden rain had come from, you noticed a boy sat watching you from up above in the tree's branches.
He didn't smile, but continued looking down at you... at least you thought he was looking at you, you couldn't make out his eyes as he had his head bowed forwards.
"You could return to the kingdom... but it would be a waste." he said. His voice was kind, but riddled with dread and mourning.
He had blonde hair that was singed at the tips, his top was dirty but bright green with a large swirling icon on the front. His legs were clad in blue shorts, one lifted up to his chest, the other dangling casually off of the branch. On his feet he wore small sandals/thongs.
"W-what do you mean?" You found yourself asking, curiosity settling on your mind.
Finally he looked up to reveal bright blue eyes that shimmered with kindness and a slight hint of everlasting freedom.
"The kingdom... has fallen."
"W...what?! How?!" you shouted, taking a step back out of astonishment.
"They came... and they burnt it all. My home... my family... my..." he looked back down "My... kingdom."
"Your kingdom?!"
"Well, not anymore."
You watched as he stood and began walking across the branch like it wasn't a difficulty at all. You noticed the bland headband peaking from under his blonde hair, only the sapling prince wore such a headband. And on his back... a small white bag, again, only an item the prince possessed.
"My soon to be throne. Taken away!" he jumped, landing in front of you on his feet and making you fall backwards.
You didn't care about the wet mud that now caked your legs and hands, it even stained the elbows of your favourite jacket, but you didn't care. Because as you looked up at this... this being, you could feel the sorrow. Yes he was scaring you, but as you looked into his blue eyes... you couldn't help it, tears began to roll down you cheeks.
"Why are you crying?" he asked kindly, taking a few steps back. "Did I scare you?"
"No! It's... it's nothing." You wiped your tears away and rose to your knees.
"I frightened you... This is why father hid me away..." he mumbled to himself sorrowfully. He rose his arms to the side and yelled into the now dark sky as he dropped to his knees. You watched in worry as lightning struck through the dark sky, fireflies and leaves made their way towards the boy. Vines whipped from out of the bushes and unwrapped from around trees, then wrapping themselves around the pale boys arms and slipped around his neck.
"Don't!" You shouted, causing the boy to look up at you. You could see that the vines were hurting him, digging into his skin, growing thorns that pierced him and drew blood. All the while, even though you could see the pain he was going through... he never let a tear escape his eyes. He was so... brave.
"Please don't!" you shouted, you tried to be brave like him, show him that he should listen to you, but as you shouted and leaned forwards on your hands, digging them into the mud, tears rolled from you eyes in waves.
You watched as the vines slowly retracted, the skies no longer flashed with storms and returned to the cloudy night. The boy dropped his arms by his side and bowed his head again.
"I just wanted a normal life."
"You still can!" you said softly. He didn't do anything.
You both sat, facing each other but not seeing what the other was doing or thinking. But suddenly, you heard sobbing and saw small drops of water dripping onto the floor in front of the boy.
You finally decide to make your way over, crawling forwards and putting your hand on his shoulder, he looked up to you. His neck was dripping with blood and so were his arms. But as you watched, the wounds healed themselves.
"W-what are you?" you found yourself asking.
"I... I'm a child of the forest. A spirit child as some call us. There is one for each forest, but due to forest hackers, the people who burnt down my home, there is only one left. Me."
"You're so brave." you said. You didn't know why, but it slipped from your lips.
You watched for the boys reaction, clenching you jaw slightly incase he did something bad. But you were confused when you saw him start to laugh! He rolled onto his back, wiping tears from under his eyes.
"I like you!" he stated, chuckling through the sentence. "What's your name?"
"Toby."
"Toby... Nice. I like your jumper!" he grinned.
"Thanks?"
"I would tell you my name, but it's lost in the little woods... I don't even remember it."
You watched as the boy sat up, crossing his legs and smiling to you.
"What will you do now?"
"Well... now that my source of power is destroyed... My power will start to fade. I'll no longer be able to use my usual powers. However, if I keep a stash of sapling on me at all times, and plant one every so often, making sure to nurture the forests in the worlds... I should be able to keep my life force steady and keep it from deteriorating."
You nodded, you think you understood... If he wasn't near forests he would be able to stay alive.
"You could always... Come with me."
He tilted his head slightly and gave you a blank look, making you chuckle to yourself.
"You don't want to be involved with someone like me Toby."
"Yes I do! You're the first person to say that you like me! And I don't have anywhere else to go..."
He bit his lip. "I guess it's a good thing that I lead you away from the fire then."
"What do you mean?"
"Heh, are you kidding?! I'm the master of sneaking! I wouldn't have been spotted by you if I didn't want to. You looked sad. I thought we both could use a friend."
"Exactly! Friends! Friends stick together!"
He began laughing again, in his fairy like voice that sounded like a thousand little bells ringing. You liked his laugh.
"Buddies?" he asked and you couldn't help but beam at him. A shot of thunder sounded again, causing you and your new friend to flinch and wrap your arms around each other.
"Can we be thunder buddies?" You asked, causing the blonde to laugh again.
"Don't worry." he said. "As long as i'm here, nothing will ever hurt you again."
You sat hugging each others arms for the next ten minutes until the sudden storm stopped and then let go of one another, laughing to each other.
"So! Down to business!" you said happily as you sat a bit further back from him, not caring about your jeans or jacket anymore, they were ruined anyway. The boy tilted his head again and this time raised an eyebrow.
"You need a name!"
"I've been thinking... I think my original name was something like... Marxktytn"
"Marxktytn?!"
"Something like that."
"Hmm... hehe, how about Marvin?"
"Mmmm, doesn't sound like me..."
"What about Marti?"
"Martin?"
You both looked to each other and smiled widely "Martyn!" you both shouted at the same time, before exploding into a fit of laughter.
"I love it!" he stated through chuckles.
"Especially since yours was lost In the little woods."
"I need a last name... right?"
"I don't have one, I don't even remember mine."
"Hmmm, Littlewoods..."
"Yeah, you said in the little woods."
He beamed at you once more and shot up to his feet. "Inthelittlewoods!" he shouted. You didn't like it at first, but it suited him down to the ground. You stood up and both began walking through the forest, not really knowing where you were going, but glad you both now had a friend.
From then on, Martyn watched out for Toby. He kept him safe, and kept to his promise, that as long as he was around, nothing could ever hurt him. It was a stupid promise really, because he couldn't stop the clumsy kid from falling over or dropping something and accidently cutting himself. But never the less he still watched out for him. Even though he didn't really realise, Toby watched out for him too. He made sure that he kept under control, that he kept his other promise, sure he never said that it was a promise, but Toby made sure he kept it despite that small detail, he made sure that the now sapling king wasn't alone, that he wasn't unhappy, and that he helped him to stay alive. And for that and all of Martyn's help, Toby kept his secret. He wanted him to be a normal person, he wanted his wish to happen. So when they had both met the others, he made sure not to tell them off the sapling kings past. He wasn't a kid anymore, and Toby, was no longer scared.
