Description
There had been smashing and clattering coming from the hut all day. They had replaced the door straight after leaving and the spaceman had seemed very active inside. At the end of the day, they decided to go look, after Honeydew had said he couldn't ignore it anymore. There had been growling, smashing, ripping. The noise that came from within the hut was horrendous and he wanted to see if the spaceman was okay.
They stood at the door and knocked wearily, the noise from without just a heavy breathing and not much else.
The dwarf looked to the other two and slowly pushed the door open.
The spaceman, had his back to them. He was kneeling on the floor, slumped forward. His right arm, cut from elbow to wrist with a long, deep wound. His skin was pure white. The mirror had been smashed and the windows covered. The bed sheets were ripped and the walls held scratched across them.
"X...Xeph?!" Honeydew asked, trying to remain calm. But upon seeing the mark on his arm he became worried.
He didn't go closer, just in case.
The spaceman's ear twitched, recognising the voice. Recognising his friend. His head slowly turned so that he was looking over his shoulder at them, his mouth dripping with his own blood. His eyes glowing a bright red as he stared.
"Xeph...?" Lalna asked.
There was a moment. A moment where the silence seemed to hang in the air. Then he quickly looked away.
The dwarf made his way over, turning the spaceman slightly, checking him. He wiped at his mouth to remove what he could of the blood, and then turned to his arm.
"Your own blood won't sustain you Xeph..." Ridgedog stated.
Before the dwarf could do anything for the spaceman, he shrugged him off, almost throwing him across the room.
The dwarf, taken back by shock, rolled back onto his knees.
When he looked back at his friend, he realised his friend wasn't looking back at him. In his friends eyes, he didn't see the man he looked up to. He saw a stranger. Staring. Expressionless.
"...Xephos..." He breathed, preying in his mind that the spaceman hadn't turned.
The spaceman twitched slightly. Turning his head down to one side so that he was looking away. He closed his eyes, keeping them clenched shut for a fee seconds before slowly opening them again.
"He's... Not here..." He whispered, his tone ominous and menacing. The dwarf and everyone else stared at the spaceman. His clothes were also ripped, his arm bleeding profusely. He needed to get that cleaned up. "Yes... I... I'm sorry I..." The spaceman shook his head slightly, putting a hand to it. His normal tone returned. 'I'm fine.' He said, seeming confused about where he was and what was happening. "No you're not... Shut up. I am... I'm just tired." He mumbled to himself, curling up into a ball and rocking back and forth slightly.
"You're a monster..." He whispered to himself. "Monster... Monster... The beast... I'll swallow you whole... I'll eat you up... Take your life... You're mine... You're..."
He felt a hand on his shoulder, and looked up slowly to see the dwarf, kneeling in front of him and looking up, half filled with sorrow, the other... Guilt. If only he'd out up a harder fight when his friend had offered to take the burden.
"Xeph..." The dwarf spoke calmly. Kindly.
The spaceman stared at him, not really saying or doing anything.
"Xeph... Its ok... You can do this... We know you can... You just need to get your strength up again..." Honeydew gave a small sad smile.
The spaceman continued to stare at him, before the dwarf slowly saw a few speckles of colour return to his pale cheeks, his eyes were returning to their natural blue and his teeth retracting back down in size.
A second occurred where they grew longer, his eyes widened slightly, his skin turned pure white and he hissed under his breathe, but then the second passed.
And his expression changed, turned sad. His eyebrows furrowed, his mouth slightly open in a questioning way. Before he knew it, his eyes were watering. His lip quivered, and he felt himself start crying.
The reaper and scientist looked to each other as Honeydew hugged his friend, holding him in his arms as he curled up and sobbed to himself, his hands pressed up against his own body, his legs curled up, one hand to his face. He looked so hurt. So broken.
The crying continued, but eventually the dwarf managed to calm him down.
------------
They were sat in the big H building. Honeydew was next to Xephos, who was sat down on a machine, staring blankly at the floor. He didn't want to look at anyone. The dwarf was bandaging up his arm.
"I can't really do stitches because its a vertical cut but... I can patch it up and hope for the best..." The dwarf explained calmly.
The scientist and reaper would look over every so often, catching the spaceman's attention, but he didn't react. He just watched them turn back away and continued looking down at the floor.
He turned to his dwarven friend, who was looking up at him, smiling.
"There we go..." He heard the dwarf say.
He looked down at his arm. All bandaged and healed. Ridge then came over and ran his hand over the bandages, endowing them with his magic to help the healing process. "You wanna go try and rest?" The dwarf asked. His tone was caring. But a lot like a mother talking to a child.
The spaceman shook his head.
Ridgedog sighed. "You're gonna have to talk sometime Xeph... You can't just shut us out." He said. The dwarf gave the reaper a nudge and he walked away.
"Don't listen to him Xeph... He is right but... Phrased it terribly... Listen... Its ok to not want to talk... But you can't keep shutting us out... Were here for you... Were trying to help." He gave a small smile.
The spaceman, tired, black bags under his eyes, stood and put Hus hands in his lockets, before walking over to the door, and out.
He didn't stop until he got to the shack, then walked round the other side, resting against the wall, one hand still in his pocket. The other went to his face, pinching the bridge of his nose. He looked up at the setting sun. The orange and purple lights it cast across the clouds. He didn't want to lose all of this. The water slowly rippled along the shore as a couple of seagulls hovered overhead, squawking down at him. He gave the best smile he could. A half smile. A sad. Half smile.
He looked down, before feeling weak. He became slightly dizzy and a sickening feeling within him began to rise, she shot round the back of the shack, and threw up.
He took a deep breathe afterwards, spitting down onto the dirt. Deciding it was probably best to try and keep what was left of him strong, he walked slowly back round to the front of the shack, and locked the door, before getting into bed, and going to sleep as his stomach rumbled up to him.
