Description He awoke and opened his eyes, squinting at the light. He shielded his eyes as he stood, looking around. He had forgotten for a moment about what had happened.
He scratched his red beard while picking up his pack. The two men who had been there the other day still hadn't turned up. He sighed, oh well, he could make it alone.
He walked a little while, into the middle of the grassy area he was in and dropped his pack, pulling out his books, some blue paper, a little bit of food to keep him going, and some metal and other materials. And he got to work.
------------
After a few hours he had finished his contraption. It was almost like a firework, a rope on the end to light. He strapped the belt around himself and looked up to the sky. The moon was still out. Only one of them shone in the day. He sighed and grabbed his flint and steel, pulling the rope to the front and lighting it. He stood and bent his legs slightly, closing his eyes. Hoping it would work.
After a couple of minutes he heard the rope fizzle to a stop. It was it. Now was the time. He clenched his eyes shut and gripped the straps that were over his shoulders.
And it exploded.
------------
He slowly opened his eyes. His dwarven skin was sore and he felt drained. But in front of him he noticed two people, standing over him. He opened his eyes fully and looked at the two, it was the two men who had been there before.
"Hey you ok man?" The blonde asked.
Honeydew blinked.
"Yeah, you scared us!" The other, blue eyed one added. "What's your name friend?" He asked, helping the dwarf stand up.
Honeydew began dusting himself off. "Um... I'm Honeydew. Dwarf of Kahz Modahn." He stood up straight.
"Cool, I'm Lalna. This is Xephos." The blonde said, smiling and shaking the dwarfs hand. "What were you attempting to do?" He asked, curiously.
The taller one at this point was picking up the blueprints the dwarf had made and was looking at it as if trying to make sense from them. "Interesting... Are you attempting to make it into space?" He asked, looking back to the dwarf.
"Oi! That's mine!" Honeydew said, grabbing the blueprints from the taller man, though he was only just able to reach.
"Sorry..." The taller said.
The dwarf looked at the two of them before looking down at the floor.
"Should we leave you to it?" Lalna asked.
"But we could help!" Xephos answered.
"Y...you could?" Honeydew asked, looking back up at them. "How?"
"Well, were working on the same thing." Xephos said. "We think we have some fairly good plans..." He turned to Lalna, who had taken the blueprints from the dwarf and was doodling onto it. "So you're a dwarf...?" He asked.
"Uh... Yeah?" Honeydew answered. "And you?" He had heard the conversation the other day, he knew this man was an alien. He had pointed ears and bright blue eyes. Strange.
"I'm not from here." Was the answered.
The dwarf nodded.
"I'm from up there." And he pointed to the sky. "Not sure where about's to be honest... And Lalna here is a scientist! A mad one at that..."
"Rude." Lalna mumbled.
"So why are you guys out here and trying to get to space?" Honeydew asked.
"Well it's part of a project that we've been sent to do from a place we're disposable interns at. It's called Yoglabs." The alien answered.
"Yeah we're not really allowed to know WHAT project... Or what it's about." Lalna added.
"Yeah... But I guess that's why we're disposable."
"Wait you guys don't mind dying for some company?" Honeydew interrupted. There was a moment's silence.
"Well, technically we get a certain number of tries... There's like different clones of us and stuff like that. It's very complex, um... We're not really allowed to know too much. But it pays good so." The alien said.
"Yeah well they do like to cut open your clone just to see what happens." The scientist answered.
Honeydew just stood, gobsmacked, at the twos casual conversation. Clones? Experiments? Where exactly did these guys work...? The above-world was a pretty weird place.
"So um, don't see many dwarves out and about?" Lalna spoke. "Well unless it's in a tavern."
"Yeah, what brings you to the surface friend?" Xephos added.
"Uh... Well I have a dream and they wouldn't accept it so... I left." Honeydew answered as plainly as he could.
"What about your friends?" Lalna asked.
"Well... They understood. A dreams a dream."
He noticed the spaceman nod. "Well at least you got a choice of whether to leave or not, sounds like a nice place." He spoke, fiddling with some small devices.
"Well I sorta had the choice of whether to leave and never go back or stay and be miserable... So..." The dwarf answered. "Why what happened to you?"
"Well I don't have most of my memories... All I remember is that I didn't leave my home planet willingly." The alien answered. "I mean it was a horrible place, way too dark in my opinion... Thats all I really remember." He gave a small smile.
There was a moment's silence, before the scientist finally looked up at them and turned the blueprints to face them.
"Ta-dah!" He said, beaming happily.
"An actual rocket...?" The dwarf asked.
"Yeah! Well with the addition if you into the mix it solves the problem we were having with the oxygen and stuff like that. And it's a perfect fit! Now we just need to make it." The scientist smiled.
The dwarf stood there for a moment. Was his dream about to become real?
The other two smiled at him and he found himself smiling back.
