Description
Commission for of her dragon Shinglow! He has such a wonderful design; I just love colouring with blue, and the colours of his mane almost look like fire!Size: A4
Done with: Watercolours and coloured pencils
Amazing to think that I had only ever drawn 4 dragons in my life, and hadn't drawn dragons for 5 years - now I have drawn 4 in the last 6 months!! I am finally getting the hang of them now, I used to find them so difficult!

Ah yes indeed I am in college!! Thank you for asking and no worries! I'm studying computer science and electronic arts, though I'm soo nervous I'm gonna die in work later on D: But college is great, it's a constant hangout with friends!! Though it has been really nice these past few days being at home with family and then saw a few friends today. I'm so excited for winter break though, it's 5 weeks long! I feel like I'll finally have time to do the things I wanted cause I won't feel guilty staying indoors all day XD What about you? Still at uni right?

Ohhh sounds good! So does that include digital art sort of things or is it more IT based? Either way is cool I actually finished uni 2 months ago!!! So I can go around calling myself a scientist now
I have been working fulltime in a microbiology lab at the hospital the past few months, which I LOVE (microbiology is my favourite specialisation). Next year I am moving interstate to do a year of honours research (will be researching tick-borne diseases!). If I enjoy it I'll prob end up doing a phD after, and if I don't feel like doing more research, I'll go back to working in diagnostic microbiology (or alternatively, work rurally in the tiny rural hospitals and save up heaps of money while living as a hermit for a year haha. I have a lot of options really)

Its digital art and animation and stuff! so exciting!
Ah that's so awesome, congratulations!! Wow it sounds like you really have your life figured out! You have a lot of options but it seems like you like all of them which is so great! Were you nervous at all graduating and stepping into the "real world?" Cause that's one of the things I'm so nervous for!! I wanna be a student forever and not have to deal with getting a job XD

In-The-Distance In reply to Aurielis [2014-12-12 08:30:15 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm I guess I don't feel that yet - the "stepping into the real world" and "having to deal with getting a job" thing, although I can imagine how it would feel!
Firstly, it's because I've been lucky enough to work in labs already during my degree (worked casually as a lab assistant at a private pathology lab during the first 3 years of my degree, worked for 8 weeks as a research assistant to my lecturer one uni holiday, and then got my current job as a microbiology tech at the hospital pathology after doing uni placement there. I was working casually there for 3 months until I finished my degree, and am now working fulltime there for 3 months before I move, trying to save up as much money as I can!)
Secondly, since I am doing honours next year I feel like I'll still be doing uni rather than work. But it will be a completely different kind of uni than just theory and pracs, it'll be a project that I want to do, and it'll feel like working as a researcher fulltime minus the pay. I also have a casual scientist job lined up to do during my honours at the town I'm moving to, because I know the manager of one of the pathology labs there!
Having said all that, moving out of home will feel like a big change!
I've been working fulltime at the moment and I have to say that I don't know how people can do it for decades at a time XD I LOVE the money and I enjoy the work, but you don't have much time for a life outside of work!!! I am like you - I want to be a student forever XD I love being a student more than working. I've been enjoying my current fulltime work only because I know that there'll be an end to it!! I wouldn't mind working part-time, or I wouldn't mind just taking turns between working fulltime for a few years and then going back to uni for a few years! XD
Sorry that was long!
What kind of job do you imagine eventually getting?? (Or at least that you would like!)

Oh wow you've already done so much research in your academic career; that's amazing!! I know I'm only just a freshman but I feel so underaccomplished and behind and can already feel the stress of applying to jobs and stuff cause people are constantly talking about it! >.<
What does "doing honors" mean? Is that a program for doing so well in uni? Wow so much research! My sister has done a lot of research and she hates it! She gets so bored haha XD You must really love research! What do you do on a daily basis at work? hahah yes I can imagine the money is AMAZING! I'm hoping that I will be able to make a good amount of at a job that I want to do! But I'm so nervous about loans and debt! SO MUCH DEBT!! I'm assuming uni isn't nearly as expensive in Australia as in the US but I have no idea XD
And yeah that totally makes sense! Like such limited amount of days off, having such a set schedule Mon-Fri - it sounds like it can get pretty mundane. And don't worry about your reply being so long! I enjoy reading all you have to say!
And I would love to work in the animation industry! Preferably making movies but making video game art doesn't sound too bad either! I just love how all those images put together can create such life even if nothing is actually moving! And the characters are so relatable! I think it would be amazing to be able to create something that has such a lasting impact on others as Pixar or DreamWorks or even cartoons like Adventure Time or Avatar the Last Airbender has had on me and motivate them to become brighter, introspective people! Ideally I would love to work on character animation but I could see myself also doing rendering or character effects (which I would utilize my computer science knowledge more) but I would just be happy to just be a part of it all (and hopefully make decent money because of all the hours put in). But I'm still such a long way from it! (still have yet to try some 3D animation! I can barely even use a tablet well!)
Sorry this took me way longer than I would've liked to respond! The holiday season is quite busy!

Hmm do they not call it "honours" in america? It is a postgraduate year specifically on a research project. You can do honours in science, music, arts, business, anything really! But you need a certain mark to get in. Actually I believe in America you only call it "masters". Here in Australia we have both "masters" and "honours" but it's basically the same thing. Have you heard of "masters" degrees?
Haha so the work I was doing in some of the labs was diagnostic rather than research, so I haven't done THAT much research yet! I didn't think I'd want to do research until I found something I was really passionate about. I can understand why some people would find it boring, but I personally really like it - I love analysing results, and it's exciting publishing something into the scientific world that nobody has ever known before!!
Hmm I wonder what uni/college costs are in America?? My course was around $5,000 a year (and it was 4 years in total, so $20,000 in total). What does your course cost?? We're able to get loans from the government so we don't have to pay it all up front; we start paying it back as a small tax when we start working once we finish our degree. So I'm hoping that as I pay my loan back slowly it won't really be that stressful, because it'll be money I never had, if that makes sense.
It'd be so awesome if you got into the animation industry! I bet you'll have a lot of fun with your subjects as you continue through uni

Oh yes I have heard of a masters degree!! It does sound similar to a master degree, although a master's degree involves 2 more years and I don't think a master's degree is specifically on a research project...but they do have a huge project to do at the end in order to get their degree if that's what you mean by a research project. Why does Australia have both masters and honours?
What do you mean by diagnostic? What is the difference between diagnostic and research? But yeah that makes sense! Research can get very tedious so if you're not completely devoted to the topic I'm sure it would get boring! As an outsider that's how I feel as well! But my sister would always complain about how boring it was waiting for the results of one test XD I think it's really cool that researchers are continually able to think of innovative ways to create medicine or study a specific topic and it's so fascinating to learn the new possibilities that the research opens doors for!
By "course" do you mean just one class that you take or just being at uni for the entire year taking the classes that you signed up for? Cause if so wow that is so inexpensive!! In America, you pay tuition (so that includes taking 3-5 courses a semester) along with room and board (living expenses) and a bunch of other random fees that add up. Different colleges are differently priced, and state schools are significantly cheaper than private colleges (because they are funded by the state government). State schools I've found to be around half the cost of private colleges and private colleges tend to be around 60,000 a year >.< we can also get loans from the government to help pay for tuition and the schools give us some financial aid (in scholarships or grants or additional loans) but out of my 3 sisters and me, I'm gonna be the one graduating with the most debt XP
And yeah I totally understand your mindset! That's like how I think about taxes as well. Although its painful knowing that by paying it off slowly the interest makes you in the end pay for a lot more than the original price of the loan was for
And yeah I'd be soo soo happy!! I am quite enjoying the classes I'm taking at the moment (although this one computer science class I'm taking now is a real killer...the homework assignments each week take at least 20 hours to complete so it eats up a lot of my time!) I haven't taken any animation class yet, but next semester I will be and I am so excited!! I also want to try to learn some animation software this summer! I just found out that I got accepted to this summer program I applied to where accepted students (they only accept 22 students) work together to create a video game! So I'm excited cause it'll be an incredible learning experience but I'm quite sad that I won't be home for the majority of the summer! :*( but hopefully I'll be learning some animation software there so it'll be killing 2 birds with one stone, or learning about gaming engines which is also really exciting! But I'm gonna miss my family and friends a lot :/

Yes you're right, you can choose to either do Masters by Research or Masters by Coursework. On the other hand I believe Honours is only ever by Research. I have no idea why Australia has both masters and honours. Maybe it's because you used to only be able to do honours within 2 years of finishing your undergraduate degree, whereas masters you can do even if it's been 10 years since you finished, etc. But these days most unis have changed it so that you can do honours any time after you finish your undergraduate degree as well. So who knows!
"diagnostic" is when you run tests to diagnose patients. You're not researching anything new or trying to design new tests or anything like that. Whereas "research" is when you're trying to discover/prove/invent something new!
I find it weird that you have private colleges and state colleges?? Our universities are all 'private' I guess you could say although all get a little bit of money from the government. Having said that, ALL Australian uni degrees tuition fees are subsidized by the Commonwealth Government. This means that Australian citizens pay a lot less than international students. So how do your degrees work? You said that you do 3-5 courses a semester; how many courses in one year? We do 8 courses per year, and our degrees usually are 3-4 years long. Each year costs ~ $5,000-$6,000 a year tuition if you are an Australian citizen. If you are not an Australian citizen (i.e. you are an internation student) it is ~$25,000 per year, so this sounds more like what you pay at a state school! I can't believe how expensive your tuition is!!
This price doesn't include accommodation though. Accommodation on-campus costs around $150-$350 per week depending on which uni, etc.
We can get loans for our tuition fees (if you are an Australian citizen anyway) and that's what I did.
How many years does a degree in America take to finish?
Did you end up taking that summer program where you learn video game creation stuff??? It sounds like a really good opportunity, I think I would've taken it if I were you even if it meant not going home those holidays.
Haha I don't have a job anymore because I moved states to do this research! I had to leave my old job when I moved. I'm trying to get another job while I do research though!

Ah I'm so sorry for not responding for so long! >.< I really don't use deviantArt as much anymore but you're still someone I really care about on this site!
Ahh thank you for asking I did end up taking it!! And I'm really happy I did! I've been learning so so much this summer about game development and working in a professional environment and networking/meeting new people. It's also been really amazing learning from a whole new set of artists with different backgrounds and disciplines!
Wow I really love learning about the education system in different countries (I have no idea why XD). Like in the summer program, there's someone from Ireland and one of the first questions I asked him about Ireland was the education system there!
Is there a difference between Honours and Masters? Like does one get looked at with more prestige than the other or are they both looked at equally? Cause then I feel like it really doesn't matter which you choose to study! Like the titles don't mean anything different (which honestly I wouldn't be criticizing; I think that's totally fine)
Oh wow that's still so cheap!! *cries* I feel like since going to college is looked at as more and more necessary to get a good job, the colleges hike up the prices because they can! But then you get people who drop out simply because they can't afford it and end up at dead-end jobs with their potential wasted or people who come out having $100,000 in loans! And unless you come out making big bucks you're gonna be paying off your loans like all your life!! The $60,000 I mentioned before at a private school includes accommodation, which is roughly the same as in Australia (at the high end) but still tuition itself is still crazy expensive >.<
Although I will ask, are there high taxes in Australia? Because I recall my history teacher saying in other countries, the taxes are much higher so citizens have less spending money, but they have less to spend their money on because college is either free or much cheaper and theres universal health care, etc.
In America, you take 6-10 courses a semester (at my school most take 8 a year) and there are 2-year degrees called Associate's degree and 4 year degrees (more common and looked for for jobs) called Bachelor's degree. You can get a Master's degree after bachelor's which is 2 extra years and then a Ph.D which is 4-8 more years I believe?
Does your research pay at least? Wouldn't want you to starve! D: But you're really experienced and talented so I'm sure you'll be able to find another job!
