Description
Decided on making my own box.Once I realized my original measurements were off, I went back to the drawing board and built one more box prototype. The third one I built, in the first photo, was perfect. Very solid, crisp lines, the right size. After assembly, it's funny to realize there are all of 2 shapes to this box. Hexagons, and rectangles. So simple.
Took me a day to figure out what design to put on it. Once I had that, I printed it out and started to cut my first draft pieces. Had to make a few revisions, but mostly got it right the first time. The initial design is in the first photo. Used the same theme paper set as the Notebook, so it and the Earbud box pretty much go together. If I need anything else to go on my monitor stand, I'll use the same theme. But since I like my desk to stay really uncluttered, it's unlikely I'll be making anything else for my desk right now.
Back to the project...Screwed up cutting the design a couple of times, and have the nicks and cuts to prove it. I finally got all my pieces perfectly cut and ready for the final assembly. This part was the worst because of all the little notches and cutting of adhesive, which is crazy sticky and super annoying to cut and place.
A couple of hours after after I placed the adhesive and cleaned up for the night, I realized all the adhesive pieces were on the wrong side of the design. Had to print, cut and then place the adhesive all over again on a brand-new piece. Working in 3D is HARD! ARG.
Finally, REAL assembly time. The second to last photo shows the interior bottom and sides, plus the exterior sides. Still have to notch and place adheseive on the top section. Last loose piece goes on the bottom and is just for the sake of making the bottom looking a little cleaner.
I'm happy with the way this came out. No major bungles, the box is solid, and the design is what I hoped for. On the fence about a lid. Probably don't need one, but if I change my mind, my design files will let me make one very quickly.
That purple gecko doesn't match, but gosh darn. He's been on my various desks for 35 years. I clean him up once a year, and his stitching is holding up nicely. Somewhat posable, and just darn cute. I don't have it in me to retire him just yet.
Next time I make something, better WIP photos, hopefully. This was for sure the most complicated thing I have made so far, and progress photos are something I have no experience with.
One last note: Now that I know how it easy it actually is to prototype a hexagon box, I've got ideas to make a big one with a lid for "display" purposes. Something over the top, with embellishments, and stuff. Maybe with a vintage Alice in Wonderland, or Circus theme. And ticking stripes!
