Whose to say Merlin wasn't once a teacher at Hogworts
(Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if he had a hand in it's founding. He is a powerful, and famous Wizard afterall.)

Dumbledore would definitely top Merlin in magical abilities and personality (Dumbledore wouldnt throw a fit if his pupil decided to become a squire.)
Fawkes is little more than a pet. Archimedes has personality and isnt afraid to mock or criticize his master, and more often his advice is more practical and insightful than Merlin.

When I read HP (i was 8 years old) I actually imagined Dumbledore to look like Merlin. Though it changed a lot later on, because Merlin just wasn't wise and sincere enough to do the job.

This is merlin were talking about the greatest wiszard to every live. I mean In the Harry Potter books the hightest award that a wizard can get is to be made a menber of the Order of Merlin. and he does not need a wand a can transform into anthing means this is not a fair contest. Still good picture.
