During the three years of intense training, Eren met [Name]. It was an odd, unexpected meeting. He would have never imagined meeting someone like you in a cold place like this. And he would have never imagined how much you would eventually mean to him.

In Eren’s eyes the two of you were so similar. In reality, you were just an understanding person who had the ability to see the world in others’ shoes. That didn’t mean the friendship you two had shared was one-sided, however. Eren was a good listener; he would always share a little of his world and his story whenever you talked. He never got bored of listening to you talk, and you never got bored of learning something new about his past, his dreams, and his unique determination. The two of you were always in perfect sync.

“[Name]. You’re joining the Survey Corps… with me, right?” Eren asked and took a small step towards you. The answer was obvious, but he decided to confirm once more.

“Yea! I want to see the outside world with my own eyes and protect the citizens from danger with my own hands. … Isn’t that what this whole life is about?” You answered and stuck your tongue out at him playfully.

He looked away and couldn’t help but notice how your hands were almost of touching distance. He wanted to grab your hand and confess to you all his bottled-up emotions. …But that wouldn’t be appropriate, and he wasn’t courageous enough to. Besides, if Mikasa ever found out, he didn’t know how much it would hurt her, or what kind of action she would take.

“… Let’s work hard together then.”

“Like always!”

He found himself irritated and hollow whenever you two weren’t together, not even his two childhood friends, Mikasa and Armin. Nobody else spoke to him like you did; nobody else could make his day just by greeting him with a small smile like you did. He was incomplete without you, but he just didn’t know how to express it using words. So he would always give you the larger piece of bread and offer to clean your blades before setting out for training, hoping you would notice his small gestures of affection and come to understand his love, almost obsession, for you.

Then the day came. Three years was up. You two were assigned to different squads, to work in different districts. It might as well have been your final goodbye, Eren realized. The annual death rates of Survey Corp soldiers were sky-high, and there was a good percentage that you would be laying among the dead bodies in the battlefield or decaying slowly in a titan’s stomach, not that he didn’t believe in your strength and intelligence, of course. He was in panic; but without thinking about it twice, he knew what he had to do.

You were preparing to set off with your squad for your new base, miles away from Eren’s, when he ran towards you at the speed of light and yelled out your name. You realized he looked a bit stiff; perhaps it was just the new uniform. His brows were furrowed and his eyes, the window to all his emotions and thoughts, gave away his nervousness.

You opened your mouth to speak when he came to a halt in front of you, but was instead cut off by his chapped lips crashing against yours, much to your surprise. Your eyes widened for a slight second, but you gave in almost immediately and reciprocated. When he broke away and huffed in embarrassment, he felt you gently squeezing his hand and saw your sweet smile.

“… I love you, Eren.” You said after a moment’s silence, making him flush bright red. Eren was completely at a loss for words; he really hadn’t planned this whole thing out beforehand, and he was definitely not the smoothest talker.

That was when you saw the far away silhouette of your leader and team wave at you in the distance, motioning for you to hurry. You glanced over and bounced off, but not before planting a quick kiss on Eren’s cheek. Only when your figure disappeared completely from his vision, did he begin registering what had just happened; but it was too late. He regretted not telling you everything he loved about you, but at least he would always have the ensuring thought of his requited love.

Now he knows that even if he never got to see you again, you would always be more than a faded memory in the back of his head, or just a story to tell. You were the ray of light in his dreary, monochrome world.

“Let’s work hard together then… [Name]. Like always.”
