Maxwell is the main antagonist in the single player adventure mode of "Don't Starve". He has dominion over that world and operates it much like a "puppet master". How he got there is a rather lengthy story I can elaborate on if you so desire.

William Carter was sort a nervous, gangly guy from London who traveled to New York to pursue his dream of being a magician. He wasn't successful and got himself into debt with the wrong sort of crowd. He decided to move to the west coast where his brother Jack was. He gets in a train crash and it was reported that he was the only one missing from it, although Jack receives a letter later that is evidence that William is alive. William claimed to have discovered an ancient book referred to as the "codex umbra". He used this book as a means to do magic tricks under the name Maxwell and became a successful magician in San Diego. Being that he ended up doing shows twice a day, every day of the week, he hired an assistant: Charlie. Use of the Codex Umbra damaged Maxwell's sanity and Charlie started to get concerned. They agreed to do one last show then take a break. In their last show, both Charlie and Maxwell are sucked into the book, which likely contains the Don't Starve world, by "them"(some sort of shadow demon things). Maxwell is "king" of the world by being a puppet to them. Charlie becomes the monster who kills you at night, but you can never see.Β
