Anime: Requiem of the Rose King

Blue = Male
Green = Unknown
Purple Line (Solid) = Marriage
Purple Line (Dotted) = Affair (physical/romantic)

This one was complicated. And it wasn’t just because the anime took inspiration from Shakespeare’s play, which took inspiration from the historic Wars of the Roses. Add on the same names being everywhere, artistic license, drama & things only got harder. Also, no. The actual, historic King Richard III was not intersex. Like in Shakespeare’s play, he was a hunchback.

Also, also, I get tired having to explain the obvious, but I’ve got no other choice. I coded Richard as female here due to one simple fact: pregnancy. It’s a huge moment that leads to a massive plot point, & based on what the story gave us to work with, these are the facts. We don’t actually know if Richard’s male parts are capable of reproducing, since Anne only ever had one kid by another man. Headcannon wise, I think Richard is a true hermaphrodite. However, that’s not what was confirmed. Death of the Author can be a curse sometimes, but I adhere to the guidelines I’ve set for myself.

Finally, if I’m reading the imagery in Episode 23 correctly, Richard’s mother, Cecily, was raped while her husband was at war with the Lancasters. (The whole intersex mutation didn’t help matters, either.) None of this excuses her treatment of Richard, but it definitely helps explain it. That’s all I’m saying.
