The instructions are in the flash.

1. Motion Guides

2. Base Sketch

3. Base Lineart

4. Sketch

5. Lineart

6. Color

7. Background

8. Walkway

9. Integration

10. Foreground & Effects

Tools used:

Adobe Flash (Character Animation)

After Effects (Background and Effects)

Other:

All of the steps in the process are almost perfect cycles.

UsesΒ mirroring for the character animationΒ (the red line in the first steps of the process is the "mirror").

Dynamic loader: You don't have to wait for the flash to load completely, you can watch the steps of the process as they are loaded (if the next step isn't loaded yet, a "loading" message will appear on the bottom right until it becomes available) This should be useful for those with slower internet connections.

I hope this helps (:

nice work btw

inferno988 In reply to SrGrafo [2014-03-16 00:23:23 +0000 UTC]

Just by having an idea of the movement I wanted for each one, then animating and playing around with them until I was happy with the result, always considering a couple of things: the path they follow, it should be smooth in most cases; and the distance between to guides in the 3d space, which shouldn't change much because they are like the bones of the character. I animate them fbf instead of with tweens because that way I can create a more detailed motion, but with tweens you can make modifications much faster.

Muchas gracias! Por cierto me encantan tus animaciones, son tan fluidas CX

Omg this is so beautiful. I love the background a lot and I can't believe you did this in flash!

( I wonder if it can be done in photoshop?Β )

Only the character animation was done in flash, the background was done with adobe after effects. You can also create particle effects in flash, but they are much more limited than the pre-rendered ones (though you can make interactive particle effects, which is nice ). I dont have much experience with photoshop, I know you can create animations with it but I dont know if you can create animated particle effects automatically too, maybe with a plugin?

Oh cool! Thanks for the info.

I use photoshop a lot and yeah you can't create particle effects.

I've been getting into flash and I'm liking it. I didn't know you can do particle effects there?! I need to find a tutorial for that!

You can do a lot more with flash, but for many of the features you have to use ActionScript. For example, for the particles you would need to create a movieclip and draw a single particle in it, then with ActionScript create many of those particles and make them move, then after a while fade them out and delete them. There are also libraries that help with the creation of the particles, but you still have to deal with code and I'm not sure if thats what you are looking for.

Oh cool, thanks so much for the info. I'm not good with code at all.

I could use snippets if they have them for the particles though.

Well, there's an extension for flash with helps you create particle effects without code, but I havent tried it: [link]

Thanks for the link! But I fiddled around with after effects to make a background and I think I'm going to try that for now. I'm not good with code.

Looks like much work. (I hope Flash has an autosave .__.)
So you start with motion guides without a sketch for it. Do you know from experience where to place the circles or did you use the other walk cycle? And do you use the motion guides for non-human characters, too?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

inferno988 In reply to MeusYume [2014-02-21 18:21:12 +0000 UTC]

It didn't feel like that much work because I was working on it only for a few minutes or an hour everyday, and I'm used to save often (:

It's mostly from experience, with the motion guides you can work on the motion itself, but also on the proportions of the character. I don't usually need motion guides unless the movement is very detailed, and they can be used on any character with a structured body, its just a basic representation of the main body joints and bones after all. I'm thinking of using them more often because they are faster to animate than a regular brush stroke.

MeusYume In reply to inferno988 [2014-02-21 23:08:53 +0000 UTC]

I can't work for only a few minutes. It somehow just don't work for me. Either I overdo it and work for some hours (without saving!) or I do nothing x (
Maybe I'll force myself to work shorter, just like you - or not. Idk x)
You somewhen wrote that silhouettes are pretty fast to animate (I'm not 100% sure whether it was you who wrote it). So how are they in comparison to motion guides and regular brush strokes?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

inferno988 In reply to MeusYume [2014-02-23 04:16:47 +0000 UTC]

Get used to press Ctrl+S often, that way you will save almost by reflex haha. I'm much more productive if I work longer on something, when there's no other way I have to work on stuff bit by bit even if it will take longer, but will get finished sooner or later.

Yup, animating silhouettes is fast because you are ignoring all the details inside of it XP Though you need to know well what you are animating because its easy to miss details. Motion guides are better because they are a whole different phase of the process and can be used together with the usual phases, also the changes are really fast to make. They are faster to animate than a brush stroke because you only have to move a symbol each frame (with is like an "object" in flash, when you update the source of the object, it gets updates every time you used it), so if your symbol is a circle, you do the same motion you would do to draw a stroke, but now is to move the symbol to a new position for the next frame, its almost as if you were drawing a perfect circle each time just with a single stroke, combine that with the new-keyframe/timeline-manipulation hotkeys and you can create one of the motion guides in a few seconds.

I animate with my left hand on the keyboard, my tablet doesn't have enough buttons for all the shortcuts I use haha.

I haven't used another animation program as much as I have used Flash so I cannot say how fast it is compared to others, but its fast enough for me CX You can always download the trial to see if you like it (The trial of one of the CS versions, I have read that the CC one is still kind of buggy)Β And Β you are welcome
