Make sure you have 3 copies of the same horse layer (incase of stupid messup
Desaturate one of the horse layers, and use "brightness and contrast" and lower the brightness a lot to get the black
Desaturate another horse layer, and create a layer above it as a clipping mask. fill that layer with an orange, and adjust opacity, layer type, and all that
And so basically, once you have all your colors, you can just add a layer mask (make it blackuu) and use white to paint it the stripes
but this is for photoshiop, so i'm not sure about gimpl I've totally forgotten how to use it ;n;
