..Heh. Three aspects to the answer for this:
--Hey, I'm not dissing his intelligence. The Academy's for the best and the brightest; even geniuses don't breeze through anything and everything.
--Also, this is Kirk. He'd be just as likely to sweat as much and explore every possibility for any piece of work he was really interested.
--Also, this was supposed to be oldskool Kirk and Spock, and while Kirk was still smart and all there, he wasn't played up as a prodigy quite as much.
