Description This Japanese Maple for sure had a great color. I had to sneak into somebody's yard to get the shot (saw the tree from the street when driving by).

Let me know if you like this one better or this one here:

This is very nice, I didn't vote it as best in your poll due to the top left corner. The eye is drawn to the brightest point in an image. I want to stay on the trunk and leaves but I get drawn up to those (slightly blown out) highlights. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good shot!

Oh wow! This is a gorgeous tree!
I know you were sneaking so you didn't have time to do this shot the way you would've liked to....but if you had, a smaller aperature would've been better. And use of a tripod to combat blur. The only part I don't care for are the blown highlights in the top left of the tree. But this really is a nice shot, Ingo! Well done!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IngoSchobert In reply to La-Vita-a-Bella [2009-10-30 17:33:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, logging a tripod into that person's yard would probably have been pushing it, haha.

I know the issue on the top left, and I wish I had better lighting

As it has been rather chilly here and raining, most of our leaves are gone since I took this shot so I would assume I have to wait a year before I can take another one.

I have 3 more shots of the tree, or actually two trees (there is a smaller one in the back left), but they are not that good.

La-Vita-a-Bella In reply to IngoSchobert [2009-10-30 17:40:39 +0000 UTC]

Well, if you know how to clone/blend....you could fix this one and not have to wait.
Sometimes if you just ask a person, they are more than happy to let you take pictures in their yard. But if they're not home, then I guess you're safe to do what you want.
We still have some leaves, but I can't see them in the dark.

Trust me, that person - although I don't know him/her - would not have allowed it

With your current workload you should have bought a night vision camera instead of this silly IR one

Well, then I'm glad you were able to sneak a few shots in.
Yeah...night vision would've been MUCH better! lol! The only daylight I see is what comes in from my window...and it's the same view every day.

I'm still trying to figure out my daylight thing....if the sun normally sets at 5:30pm....and I move the clock back tomorrow, now it'll be dark at 4:30pm? That sucks.

La-Vita-a-Bella In reply to IngoSchobert [2009-10-31 22:54:26 +0000 UTC]

I had to move tomorrow's photoshoot time back one hour. I had told the people I could do it at 3pm thinking that I would have at least 2 hours to work with. But since the clocks are changing, I had to make it for 2pm.
I'm nervous about the photoshoot. I don't normally do portraits, but a friend said his daughter needed senior portraits and would I do them? I told him portraits are much different than landscape.....and that I would do them, but I couldn't guarantee he would like them! The fun part is that she wants her picture taken with her horse.

Uh,

Sorry that I only see this entry so long after you made it, wish I could have calmed you down earlier (or tried to)

You are a good photographer and I am sure you will pick very proper compositions for you shots. I assume you bring the flash (for none-horse shots)? I think lighting will be the biggest challenge for you. Otherwise, I know you will be just fine

I did use my flash, although I struggled with getting it not to be too bright on her face. I just need to learn how to use it. I did watch a short youtube video that helped me immensely. I love youtube.

IngoSchobert In reply to La-Vita-a-Bella [2009-11-02 23:38:34 +0000 UTC]

LOL,

That's out Paula

Did you leave it on auto or did you actually monkey with the settings?

Ingo

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

La-Vita-a-Bella In reply to IngoSchobert [2009-11-03 01:04:03 +0000 UTC]

I left the flash on auto for most of the shoot, but at the end, I adjusted the output for the last set of shots. I also money'd with using the bounce card and not having the flash hit her directly. As for the camera, I set it for auto ISO and shutter priority so that I made sure to get a fast enough speed that I didn't cause blur. But what I didn't think of was that it was so freakin' bright (didn't get the cloudy day they promised) that I should've upped the speed so that I got a more shallow DOF. But at least I can tweak that in post processing by layering and adding blur. But the important part is that the shots are sharp and the flash got rid of the harsh shadows on her face.

IngoSchobert In reply to La-Vita-a-Bella [2009-11-03 12:53:54 +0000 UTC]

Seems like you did everything right there (when not counting the extra DOF)

If I had off-camera capability for my flash and some reflectors, I could've done better, but what does she expect for free?

Free is my favorite four-letter F word.
No food or hug...don't know her that well. But her dad is the guy who lets me shoot the animals at his farm and borrow ducklings, so it's a fair swap.

I really like all your work, I secretly hope someday I could take as good a shot as you do. This one really caught my eye, the color is so vibrant and the the darker limbs of the tree just seem to pop against the bright colors. The whole picture just gives off a warm glow and feeling.

IngoSchobert In reply to TriciaStucenski [2009-10-29 16:58:10 +0000 UTC]

Well thank you so much.

I actually think my shots are not all that much (if any) better from a composition perspective. I believe I have the better camera, that alone makes a HUGE difference. Also, you are just beginning to edit your shots, once when you have that down (and it seems like you are getting the hang of it) this will improve the photos as well.

Hope this helps,

Ingo
