Description
So this is my interpretation of the play fight between Hiccup and Toothless which takes place in the sequel to How to Train Your Dragon, based off the descriptions of the film clips shown to the 2013 San Diego Comic Con. (You can read the descriptions of these scenes yourself at these links: abadpoetwithdreams.tumblr.com/… and inhonoredglory.tumblr.com/post… )The relevant part here is the following friendship gold which is from the abadpoetwithdreams report:
What follows is a glorious slapsticky scene where Hiccup tries to distract Toothless out of his sulk by wrestling with him. He’s bigger now, but so is Toothless, so the dragon just sits there unmoved while Hiccup shoves at him. Hiccup then tries to get Toothless in a headlock, wrapping his arms around Toothless’ neck. With a very deadpan expression, Toothless simply stands up on his hind legs, the result being Hiccup now dangles from Toothless’ neck with his feet well off the ground. He refuses to let go, so Toothless waddles on his hind legs towards the edge of the cliff, the end result being that Hiccup is dangling off the edge over a very long drop. He wheedles with Toothless, something about how it’s not right to treat a cripple that way, and so Toothless relents ... there’s more tussling that happens, but I forget exactly how it goes (though I remember I and everyone else in the room was delighted by it) until Hiccup ends up pinned and a now cheerful Toothless licks him enthusiastically on the face, with Hiccup complaining about how dragon saliva stains.
Just when I read that, I had to do something!! It feels so in-character for Hiccup and Toothless, and so incredibly precious. After the Comic Con and reading the clips' descriptions and DeBlois' mindset in planning HTTYD2, my confidence has skyrocketed for how good HTTYD2 is going to be. A confidence that is supported by so much evidence of how these DWA people know what they have and know how special it is, and how powerful a story can be just focusing on the love between Hiccup and Toothless and the inherent conflicts in Hiccup's life. I can't wait to see these scenes come alive!!
Also, a very happy birthday to my awesome friend ~HiccupxHaddock (hiccupthehairyhooligan.tumblr.… )!!

Yeah the friendship is definitely getting stronger, strong enough that Hiccup and Toothless cam make jokes and tease each other with their lives.

Yeah, you better have a strong trust if you let your friend tease you with your life!

I love Toothless's smug smile there as Hiccup is clutching for dear life. Toothless's way of saying that Hiccup's impulsive behavior has gone too far.
And Hiccup shouldn't complain about dragon saliva; it does have healing propitiates.

Oh gosh Toothless expressions in this scene when it's all rendered and perfected are going to be amazing! Toothy certainly made his point to Hiccup but I think Hic likes it.

Oops, I mean healing properties. Probably the reason why Hiccup has survived so much is because of all that licking.

This "boys just being boys" moment is making me squeal like a little child. I was so afraid Hiccup would lose his sarcasm and playfulness but, nope, he still has Hiccup's personality. Eeeee

inhonoredglory In reply to Pieam [2013-08-16 07:02:38 +0000 UTC]
You're certainly right! He's still our adorable Hiccup, with even more boyish fun with his best friend. I was afraid about certain things in the sequel too, like Hiccup's character. But I'm much more confident now that he's still got his humble, sarcastic core intact.

Hiccup: "Help! Get me down, somebody!"
Astrid: "You idiot!, How did you get up there in the first place?"
Hiccup: "I have know idea"
More traditional-drawing/digital-colouring? You make me want to that now At least I'm trying to learn how to use Pen Tool

I bet your reference was the hug scene from GotNF, because I really recognize that in this painting. If you'll allow me to be a bit harsh, Hiccup's eyes are too squarish for my taste. I mean... proportions, hair, details on clothing... all awesome. I admit that those square eyes fit your style of drawing, but they could still be a bit rounder. And the colours... I think they could have brighter with a little bit more contrast to them. After all, it's a birthday present (which is totally amazing from you) so brighter and a bit more contrast colours would just add the happy emotions to the gift. This feels kinda dark to me. Don't make me believe you had a bad day! There are lots of articles on the internet about which colours induce which emotions. It's very important to have this knowledge when making art, drawing and 3D as well. Same thing applies to music; every emotion has one or more frequencies associated to it. This is one of the more secret keys to HTTYD's success.
But anyway, this painting is very good. I hope I wasn't too perfectionistic.

Haha actually I only used the hug for placing Hiccup and getting a general reference. Toothless came out of a cap from the teaser trailer, if you frame-by-frame it you can find the ref! Interesting thoughts on Hiccup's eyes. I was influenced by hubedihubbe's style on simplification of the Big Four's anatomy, and the interpretation of Hiccup's eyes as rectangular really struck me as interesting. Thanks for the color notes, and I did read about colors before, but I have a tendency to not be flashy with any of my art and a bright color behind this made it look kind of sickly when I tried it. You should totally see my bday gift to theNightFuryfan95 over on my YouTube when we're in the subject of darker celebration gifts!
Seriously, it's really about what the person on the other side would want to have.
Anywho, I'm sitting on a heap of messages from you. Apologies. I'm just really tired.

Hehe, I can imagine how tired you are. Take your time, although I admit I'd need the drawing tips I sent you a Tumblr message about (more details in my dA journal if you're curious) But anyway - gifts like this are the most powerful ones. It's not only in the picture itself though, it's also in the thought that someone actually remembered about someone's birthday, and in the many hours of hard work spent over the creation... all for an internet friend. It's the most beautiful thing I have seen in the past few months.

I think I linked you over on these drawing tips already...
But yeah, it's nice to make gifts for friends. Anyone who contacts me or I contact them is a person, online or not, but who deserves respect and care. By the way, would it be too much to ask when your birthday is?
