Kieran saddled Mercury in the silence of the morning, the sun had yet to peek over the treeline and mountains in the distance. For now, the barn was silent save for the sounds of horses breathing and shifting around in their stalls as morning approached. He bridled up Mercury and climbed into the saddle, figuring the stallion would cooperate for a ride through the cattle and to get him adjusted to ranch life. The sounds of horseshoes upon concrete seemed to echo between the barns as they reached the first gate.
The purple gate swung open with a creak, the pair riding through with ease as Kieran shut the gate behind them as they started towards the first cattle pasture filled with their held back heifers for their Braford breeding program. The wind whistled through the pine trees that lined the perimeter of the pen. As they came towards the first gate, the bridle around Mercury's head broke, severing the buckle that held the headstall together. The sudden popping noise of the bridle startled the half sleeping stallion and he erupted into a bucking fit, bucking better than a saddle bronc at a local rodeo, effectively throwing Kieran off.
Kieran hit the tall grass with a hard thud, looking up to see Mercury still in a bucking fit before hitting the ground on all four hooves and trotting over to a patch of grass, dragging his snapped bridle and reins in the dirt as he grazed. Kieran got up, his whole body ached from a throw like that. Luckily, he inched over to catch Mercury, who didn't seem to mind. He retied a knot in the bridle using some baling twine caught on the fence nearby, climbed into the saddle trotted the stallion towards the cattle. The new additions were fitting in nicely, three new herefords : 2 heifers and a bull that also came along with a ranch stallion, 2 show cattle, and a show goat from a ranch sale. He figured that the show cattle and show goat were for his younger siblings, Sarah and Nick, so they could get into showing livestock and work their way up to showing horses like their father Rhys made both Kieran and Eden do.
After checking the cows without another hitch, Kieran rode back to the barn and began taking Mercury's tack off, allowing him to rest for the afternoon before Eden ran Barrels on him in the evening. He studied the bridle as he leaned against the tack room door, the dark leather looked as if it had been cut by a knife to weaken the bridle, as if someone sabotaged the bridle so he'd take a tumble.
'Who could've done this.' He wondered as he walked Mercury to his paddock, the stallion half asleep again as he was turned out.
He looked towards the barn from Mercury's fence, seeing Eden walk by with her reining horse and suddenly it clicked.
Eden wanted Kieran off of Mercury so she could run barrels all year without having to share.
Well that wasn't going to happen.
