Description
I was listening to the Geek Out Loud podcast [link] the other day and the subject was the 80's. Man I loved growing up in the 80's. We had the best cartoons, clothes, and stuff (lawn darts anyone?).Anywho it inspired me to take 5 of my favorite heros with swords back in the day and draw them. From left to right:
Thundarr the Barbarian
He-Man
Snake Eyes
Lion-O
Link ( I cheated with Link and used his Twilight Princess model)

Love this so much-- terrific idea and great execution.
I'm pretty sure that if you'd included Voltron's sword in the background my brain would have melted. Β Great work!

I love this emphasis on the swords Although I'm biased by the fact that the Sun sword is the coolest one up there, the composition is very strong and plays in well with the subject matter.

Too bad the Sword of Omens isn't indestructible. It's probably the 4th strongest blade in this group.

Is it sad that I knew what all five of them were before I looked at the actual post? (though admittedly Thundarr caught me off guard for a few seconds..)

... .well... there IS one Starsaber you coulda used... granted yea, it'd still have been giant-robot sized... same with the OTHER Master Sword...
I refer to the blade wielded by Japan's Fortress/Grand Maximus... along with the weapon of choice for Victory's Cybertron leader of the same name, StarSaber
ya know... lookin at this... I realize that putting it in woulda been insanity... just because o th design... but...
FORM BLAZING SWORD!

Cool pic.
I see some comments say that you forgot Blackstarr's Starsword, but I think that would clutter this pic up too much.
There are certainly a lot of other swords that could be done like this and I'm sure you thought of them too.
FF7's Buster, SoulCalibur, Transformer's Starsaber, Strider's Cypher, even HALO's Energysword, the list goes on, etc.
(These are more contemporary of course, and probably don't fit into the time frame of the other swords).
Another problem would be image.
I think that I can safely say that almost everybody recognizes the famous weapons in this pic.
But something like Excalibur for example..... although it's probably more famous than all these swords, there is no 1 iconic/easily identified design for it.
You'd have to deliberately say: "This is Excalibur".
Again, Cool pic.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah I thought about including more but I felt these 5 were the most influential. Others like the Starsabre were a touch too big and I wanted to keep this more in scale

You could have also used the Star Sword from BlackStarr as well.

Yeah, It was part of a weapon called the PowerStar which somehow got split in half. Blackstarr had half, the star sword, and the big baddie had the other half, the power sword. Of course, I realised after I sent that that Blackstarr might be a, shall we say, obscure reference.

Nice work man, hey I was wondering what tools you use to ink. See I'm looking to ink my own work and I wanted to get some new inking supplies, at the moment I have speed ball quill pens and they work pretty good for me but I've heard a few people who ink say they like using brushes. What type of brush do you recommend if you use one? Oh and by the way I have a piece I inked on my page if you don't mind checking it out when you get free time and letting me know what you think, it's the comic book cover inked..it was my first time working with the quills.

Thanks
I use Yasutomo Black Sumi ink for my line work. It's usually found at places like Micheal's or Hobby Lobby. I use brushes almost exclusively. Winsor-Newton Series 7 sizes 2 and 3. These are usually specialty items and can be found in stores like Prizm or Bates (not sure if you have these in your area but typically any specialty art store will carry them. You usually have to ask for them since they aren't typically on display) They can be found here : [link]
I always recommend Series 7 brushs. They are the industry standard imo. When I first started I inked with Hunt 102 nibs and Micron Pigmas. They were great to get started with but I found the brush to be more fluid and versatile in line weights. Looking at your inked cover I'd say you really have it down and really the only thing I could add is that possibly there could be a bit more feathering on his abs.

No problem
Wow thank you so much I've been asking a lot of people that do ink work what tools they use and most of them act as if I'm asking them how they did a magic trick, they wouldn't tell me. I really appreciate you checking out my work and giving me a critique, most people say oh yeah it's good. But that gets me no where if I don't know where I'm going wrong. Your on my top list of great inkers, I've been studying Tim Townsend's work as well he's amazing. I'm deffinitly going to load up on all the supplies you mentioned an start practicing more, thank you again you were a great help. Oh and thanks for the fave.

Inker-guy In reply to hector2ortega [2010-01-16 16:37:19 +0000 UTC]
Yeah Tim's one of the best. Like Scott Williams (my absolute fav) I'm always looking at his work studying how he used his inks and details to make the piece pop. On the brushes I'll guarantee that it won't do what you want it to do the first time you use it. With nibs you use them like pens whereas with brushes there's a slight lean to your hand. You push with a pen and nib but pull with a brush. Theres definately a technique to it.
I'm surprised more inkers aren't forthcoming with their materials and techniques. With inking being more and more a lost art it'd seem that we'd want this special art to be more interesting to folks. Goodness knows there needs to be more inkers.
Hey if you want I can take a stab at inking your comic cover.

I thought the same about inking being a lost art. I inked a lot of my work in photoshop, until I chatted with Tim and he was telling me he doesn't recommend inking that way so he gave me a few tips and told me about the nibs. Then I found out about the brushes, but that's when no one would say what brushes they use or would recommend. I'm definitely going to practice.
Oh wow that would be awesome, I would definitely like to see your ink work on my artwork. Give it a shot if you like.

Hell yes for the lawn darts...had like 3 sets of those things and they were great. Nothing like 4 pounds of sharp fast moving lead at head level to promote darwinism. People look at me like my head is on fire when I talk about "Turbo Teen, the kid who can turn into a car" and the original spiderman cartoon.
80's kids = win - Van Halen anyone?
