Description This is my third Digital Imaging project- we had to create a 9"x18" fantasy landscape using only Illustrator. I learned a LOT about the program while doing this, and needless to say, a lot of frustration happened in the process.
I think it came out ok. The colors will probably look different than they were intended to look (this was made in CMYK, had to change it to RGB to upload to dA).
Lots of patterning. Nearly everything is pen tool- there are a few live traces (I HATE livetrace) and the clouds are blob brush. I also had to make a couple patterns, brushes, gradients, and transparencies as part of the assignment, so those are in there too.

Umm... yeah! Comment please!
...anyone recognize the powerpole?

Thank you! I was trying to use all that texture without getting the image/composition to flatten, but I don't really think I pulled that off. P:

ah. its only a little, and I only see it because you mentioned it. maybe a little atmospheric perspective? or depth of field rather..

Yeah, bumping the foreground a bit would have helped. Or depth in the eyes. *shrug*
What's done is done, I guess.

Hahaha! I enjoy your spasticness.
Glad you like it! The more I look at it, the more I realize how flat it looks. Mneh.

Yes, I can make you one for your wall. Although if you want it at actual size, it's gonna cost about $20 just to print... I can actually make an 8"x16" one instead of 9"x18" about $18 cheaper on nicer paper. Go figure.
Roll printing is expensive...

Flat? Well I mean yeah I noticed that, but... I thought it was purposeful, ahah! But I love it the way it is, you shouldn't change it.

Oh I'd totally pay for a print! C:

Gender-bender pic? Since you said "details in person," I will pretend it is super crazy and secretive or something exciting. Instead of, like, those man-self memes going around here, though I haven't seen woman-self memes?

Yesss... I've been ignoring things, too. Actually, I'm just forgetting them. Ex. One of my dA friends mailed me a narwhal she made out of clay that I can strap on my cell phone (coolest online friend EVER, right?) and I've been meaning to mail her thank-you art for over a year now... I feel like a jerk. And another dA friend finished his half of an art trade about half a year ago. I mean seriously I'm a douche. ;n;

infinessence [2010-03-01 03:40:58 +0000 UTC]

Oh, oh, oh wow.

When I first looked at the thumbnail, I thought "hmm, can't see much other than some birds, the ground, and a power pole. It's very nice from far away, but there's got to be more to it than that ... what's that behind the pole?" So then I clicked it. And garsh, my mind could hardly wrap itself around all the detail!

I just now noticed that the wires from the pole are leading into the ground, almost like there's some sort of power source down there that we can't see into. It makes me wonder what could be down in those holes! I also really enjoy the color palette in this; something about it is really earthy and again makes me think about those strange holes. Now I'm starting to think that maybe there's a city down there, or on a more abstract level ... maybe even the human imagination. I don't know, but it's definitely making me think!

So uh, in conclusion, this is neat.

inkloose In reply to infinessence [2010-03-01 04:46:22 +0000 UTC]

Haha! I love hearing everyone's interpretations. It's so great! I bet if I painted bowls of fruit or landscapes I wouldn't get this kind of awesome interaction. :3
Subterranean cities would be sweet! I wasn't sure whether to put things in the holes or not... I guess they add a neat element of mystery to things.
Thanks!

1. Powerpole = Chi?
2. Gawds, I happygasmed when I saw this. You have so fucking improved man. That's a GOOD THING. The textures and layers and the vectors and colors just screeeeam urban decay, whether you intended it or not. With the 'holes' at the bottom you can imagine this is a skull with a lightpost coming out of a hole in the top. The ONLY part of this picture I don't THOROUGHLY enjoy are the semi-formless birds. Seems like it was used to give a sense of distance, with fuzzier details, but they just look funky to me. XD
Honestly, it feels like this thing is BURSTING with meanings and messages, some of which are to be interpreted at face value and others which you rely on the interpretations of the viewers to give them meaning and for that I give you a zillion thumbs up.
3. When I saw this pieces name in my queue I imagined I saw the word 'Lachrymose' which is funny if you consider past DA conversations we've had. XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

inkloose In reply to Crimson-Jazz [2010-03-01 03:38:17 +0000 UTC]

1. Yes. Lol, you of all people. I like to recycle things. P:

2. YAY.
I was totally going for what you said! Urban decay is pretty boss, and it's sorta hard to convey in something as clean as vectors. Only thing I wish I could have added (if I had a few more hours of time) is some vectorized graffiti. That would be boss.
I like the birds. Like you said, they add depth. Repeating figures at different sizes gives a pretty profound sense of perspective. What I don't like is how flat the skull looks, and how the entire thing is somewhat bisected at the horizon line. Idk, I'm not in the mood to try to fix it now.
Yep, there's meaning in there... if even from a surrealist perspective. The Japanese text reads "Yama-bito" (mountain demon) and "Industrial Revolution" respectively. The Chinese in the right simply reads "skeleton".
3. Lol. Nice.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Crimson-Jazz In reply to inkloose [2010-03-01 04:17:16 +0000 UTC]

You did an A++++ job with urban decay. The picture OOZES it, man. I get so much meaning from this thing. The birds feel like something natural in a very unnatural landscape, a dead place. You have this huge skull, which is so DEAD it's hard to imagine it being deader (it's a word. :<) then these birds with their refreshing floral designs and the background, suggesting something better may be juuust over the horizon. The use of so many man-made symbols throughout the piece also suggests that this is a dead world brought upon by man, or that man's world is dead, which may be why it's a human skull. At the same time you have these power lines disappearing into the eye sockets, bringing the spark into the brain, perhaps? Or is the brain supplying the power for the city we don't see? THERE"S SO MUCH DAMNED STUFF THERE.

UGH, sell me a print, bra. I NEED IT.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

inkloose In reply to Crimson-Jazz [2010-03-01 04:42:46 +0000 UTC]

Haha, wow! You nearly hit it head-on. It's a little clichΓ©, I will admit, but I was hoping that the approach would be original enough. I came up with this by brainstorming a lot of things that weighed heavily on my mind at the time- mainly the human perception of biotic life. I'm working on a project now about the human interpretation of joy in other animals. And well, this kinda goes with that theme in the sense that "advancement" is really selfish and backward in a sense. Honestly, though, there's not much that we as a species are going to do about it, but it's something to be aware of. We're inevitably going to milk resources to the bone, and there will be a skeleton left, so that the natural looks unnatural in a sense. I sound like a major hippie after typing this, but this picture isn't so much about the decay and negativity of human impact on earth as it is about the way humans are interpreting their impact. Idk... I talk through pictures, not words. Sorry for my textvomit. P:

Do you really? D:

Crimson-Jazz In reply to inkloose [2010-03-01 18:05:03 +0000 UTC]

I totally get it dude. Right ON! I think this picture totally shows your meaning and even lets people draw their own meanings, which is important in art, because I think nobody really knows what they're created until someone else tells them what they think.

Also, yes I do. I'd put that thing RIGHT ON MY WALL. >:U Where it would stay and I would appreciate it FOREVER.
