Description
page 08, from the script to White Wolf/Udon's Exalted, issue 05. Check out the previous page (07) for the story behind the scenes.Kidale has been backed into a corner by the pursuing Dragon-Blood, and his partner Faka Kun is nowhere to be seen. I had a little difficulty with this page due to a lack of reference (I had a character lineup and some previous issues to work from), which manifested in the shape of Kidale's sword... I took too much design leeway and we ended up having to correct it in the color phase (and later pages), but the version I did originally remains visible here.
I also wasn't exactly sure what the "Simhata" was supposed to look like, so I took some liberties there as well. I like to add detail when I can, even on a rush job, so rather than just labeling the cage I tried to get a little creative with the banner on the wall, instead. This is one of those places where comparing what I did to what will be ultimately published in the upcoming Exalted collection from Udon Comics ought to be neat, 'cause there's some latitude with interpretation.
Drawn in Manga Studio EX with an Intuos tablet. And now, on to page 09...

Awesome! I like the first panel. It has a nice sense of space. I also love how energy blasts can be deflected by swords.

how the f*** did he get the sword out of scabbard?
the last frame is best in my opinion, seems like you get the best dynamics in frames were things move awfully fast. in the upper frames I'm kinda missing a special kind of style. they look less interresting. don't get me wrong, I think you have the full ability to do that, just seems like you forgot it.
love your work man, I'd just like to see some more experiments from you when you have some time off, defining a more groovy style, exept if You are happy with what you do.
it's all a matter tastes in the end anyhows.

Magic!!
Yeah, I got no idea how it went from wrapped to bare... if nothing else, shouldn't there be a wad of cloth laying about somewhere?

I'm not sure, but the second to last panel doesn't feel as dynamic as it perhaps could have been in my opinion. I'm no pro, but it would have felt better to me to have the focus more on the kid blocking the...whatever that is and less on the surroundings. On the whole it still looks leaps and bounds above anything I've ever done, but that thought keeps occurring to me as I look it over again and again.

The layout on this page was handed to me, so I can't comment much on it... I was allowed to modify the layout as much as I wanted, but with the time I had available I didn't do that any more than I had to.

Bottom left is win, though, that character seems sort of amatuer to be wielding such an epic long blade.

Yep, that's the way it is in the story. I purposely tried to make him look clumsy and unsure in these panels as well, which contrast with scenes later on.

Ooooh, I see, Daiclaves eh? Its just our FF7 friend Sephiroth has given the public such an embedding image of mastery in association with wielding blades that long. I AM A VICTIM OF POPCULTURE.

Well, the Exalted RPG gamebooks clearly admit that they're taking a lot of inspiration from anime in general, and Final Fantasy in particular. Given the wide range of design aesthetics in that series alone, though, there's still a wide range of possiblity. They also cite Ninja Scroll as a reference, which I've found pretty inspiring myself.

Wow, excellent job once again.
I've heard about Manga Studio and I've always wanted to try it, but I've never had access to a copy and there's no way I'm near good enough to warrant the purchase. :\

Well, pro animator (6 years). Pro illustrator (11 years), but not really for comics. Comics are a whole trick unto themselves, 'cause it's like illustrating MANY pictures instead of just one, so you have to adjust workflow and style considerations to match for production constraints.
Some people make that shit look easy, but honestly it gives me the whimwhammies sometimes. And it seems like in comics espescially, you're only as good as your worst drawings. When the pressure is on, it's all too easy to make mistakes, so you have to be that much better at what you're doing. It's amazing the crap you can hide in animation, but every frame of a comics page holds still for examination, and the work has to stand up to that.
It's a full-time gig, that's for sure.

Speed lines in particular are silly easy, though I'm still working out all the wrinkles. You can either auto-generate 'em with a Filter or you can lock a Layer to a Vanishing Point so that all the lines you draw converge, which is what I used most often.
Overall the program works a lot like Photoshop, so if you're familiar with that then you're likely to adapt fast. It's got a lot of nice dedicated inking tools, and it organizes documents in an espescially efficient way for comics creation work, by making panels into Layer Sets and allowing the artist to concetrate both on the page as a whole and the panel in particular.

While the Simhata on the banner is not the same as an actual simhata - they're supposed to be a lot more horse-like - I have to say your version kicks so much more ass. They should've come to you first for artwork and then the whole game would've looked that much cooler!

Is there reference in one of the gamebooks? I'd have rather gotten it right...
The reference in the script was to a previous issue (03, I think), and I think I must have looked at the wrong critter or something, but I tried to base this design from that one.

Big-Ass Swords are a category unto themselves in the world of Exalted, called "daiclaves". I believe that category also applies to Big-Ass Hammers, Big-Ass Spears, Big-Ass Nunchuks and Big-Ass Wiffle-Bats as well.
