Description
Another name that I plan to change, I think... everyone who does bird-men tends to go for the Egyptian mythology link, and I don't want to necessarily do that... so I'll have to do a little research and think of something else.In the meantime, these guys are wicked fighters. Their bones are hollow and they have extremely powerful leg and chest muscles, allowing them to leap high and perform powerful kicks (I like the idea that they would use a capoeriera-style of fighting using lots of claw strikes and vicious, acrobatic kicks), or strike with lightning speed. They are very intelligent, but they cannot speak any language that humans would recognize... there are ways to communicate with them, but like most creatures on The Wall they have an ingrained hostility towards humanity. Their culture is rich but mysterious.
--EDIT--
A friend over at PencilJack hooked me up with some Incan mythology for the Garuda, a creature with golden skin, the head of an eagle and the body of a man. It could work... whaddya think?

Hmmm... they're not much like the Tengu...
But I could call 'em Tenjou, which is reminiscent of Tengu and is part of the name of my favorite fightin' manga, Tenjou Tenge (must pay homage to my inspirations!)
Good thought as well...

hmm, you're right about them not being reminiscent of the Tengu in Asian mythology but Tenjou sounds close enough to bring them to mind without being a direct reference. The best names are often made from adapting a similar name into something new.
Garuda also works, and may have a closer physical resemblance but it just depends on what connections you want the reader to draw. Anyone who recognizes the reference is going to draw connections between the original mythological character and your character, what name you finally decide will need to partially reflect that.

When you're looking at bird based beings don't forget to look into Tengu I think they're called. They were cheesy on Power Rangers (what can I say, my son liked them), but are actually based in Asian myth.
No need to thank me, just go win the contest so I can say I knew you when.

Wicked. Man, I can't wait to see this story. It's the one you're entering into the Tokyo Pop thing, right?

Yah, I hope... if I don't enter with this project, then it's because I'm entering as part of a collaborative with a comic we made a few years back. If that's the case, then I'll probably try to enter this one in the summer (for Rising Stars of Manga IV). Either way I find it hard to think of any way in which creating a 20-page comic for Bibliotech is a bad thing...
