Description
The animation in this is the same as the one I've submitted previously, here: [link] , BUT... we ran it through the editing station for fun and tossed in sound effects. And it's really a good example of an adage which I heard recently that covered something I'd noticed in all my favorite films. And it goes like so:"Sound is 70% of what you see".
In animation, where there is no such thing as "incedental audio" captured during the shoot... every sound you hear in any anime or cartoon or animated movie is placed with deliberation, and the difference between good sound and bad can make or break a film.
How many times have you seen characters in a cartoon (this happens a lot with the more cheaply produced daytime kids cartoons) walking through a crowd and talking to each other... and that's all? Perhaps some music, perhaps some footsteps... but they're in a crowd! Why aren't there the souns of many people, that constant ocean of murmurs and half-heard words and so forth? The little things like that make all the difference.
At any rate, here's the Skirmish with a good dose of sound effects from the Fates vault. Sorry for the itty-bitty image size, but sound ain't small. Compare it to the larger (silent) version and see the difference a little sound makes.

No idea! This was done up for sound by an editor at Fates, they've got an internal library like most production houses.

last kick the angle wasn't so clear. I didn't know what happen at the first place. But all the moves was nicely design, good timing I bet you lean some kido before you get your hand on the animation?

Shouldn't need more than a recent version of Quicktime to play an mpeg-4 file.
Vista... gawd no.

Really? That's not right at all, it's just a .gif file, nothing special about it. Maybe it's your browser?

Wait, my mistake... this is MPEG-4, not .gif... the original was .gif
Try making sure you have a recent version of Quicktime (you can get it without iTunes now, thankfully, and everyone ought to have QT installed just 'cause it's a very popular format for high-quality video online) and try again.

Do you use refrences when you animate or do you just use comen sence to how it would look we like the guy runs or swings a sword? Cause thats just amazing, its animated just as good or if not better then samurai champloo or naruto!!! You must work for an animation company!!

Inkthinker In reply to PiletX [2007-01-27 07:31:33 +0000 UTC]
A little bit of each, actually. Sometimes a move goes a certain way because it has to in order for the action to continue... this guy has to move over here to avoid this other guy, this punch has to happen like this or that because otherwise the sequence won't work. That's the common sense part.
On the flip side, I also do pay a lot of close attention to action movies and animation, and some things are done a certain way because that's the way I've seen them done before. It's a mix throughout.
And yep... I'm the lead animator for a little production house in Tampa, Florida. It's a tough job, but sometimes it's pretty awesome.

That's great!! I really appreciate you telling me cause I'm into animation too. I just started recently, and it is difficult. Does your job have good money involved?

Inkthinker In reply to PiletX [2007-01-28 06:27:52 +0000 UTC]
Nope.
Animation is a pretty odd job. If you can get in with a major studio, there can be good money (also long hours and lot of pressure), but there's a lot of people try to take the same jobs you want. For the most part production (the actual drawing of frames and such) is sent overseas to India, Thailand, Korea or Malaysia... there's more work for storyboard artists, layout artists and compositors in the US than there is for actual animators.
But if you want to do it, and you can get good at it, you make a living. It is one of the cooler jobs that I know of.

Yea I was thinking of either being an animator, or a concept artist for video games. But I don't know enough about either side to make my decision. But i enjoy both animating and creating characters and stuff in photoshop.

Well, to start you can just concentrate on being a good illustrator. If you're working to improve your skills as an artist, then options open up as you go down the road.

I was wondering what the number of "time between frames" you had, because I noticed you double and triple framed many times, and it came out looking flawless.

On the average, most animation runs at 30fps in "twos", which leads to an average framerate of 15fps. This is a fairly standard practice throughout animation. But because your display is always 30fps (25 if you live in Europe, 24 if you're going for film rather than TV) you're not chained to a 15fps framerate... you use it as an average, but when you want something hang a little you can hold for 3/30 instead of 230, and if you want real snap you can set a frame to 1/30.
For the most part, when building animation I work at 25fps because a GIF works in fractions of 100, but that gets adjusted to 24fps in composition, and usually is converted to 30fps with a 3-2 pulldown (the way films get converted for television). Since each drawing gets held for two frames of video, that means I draw an average of 12-15 frames for every second of final time.

You're doing good so far... just keep at it, and don't take the basics of illustration for granted, even when drawing in a certain style. Everything looks best when the basics are there.
