Description What is a water snake?
What is a water snake amongst friends eh?
Heh…

“Hydra” they call it.
Today…
The fact of the matter is, this constellation is one of the older ones.

Futuring in multiple greek myths.
One of them claiming that Apollo tossed it up on the sky in a rage after a raven tried to serve it to him, in what was supposed to be a simple cup of water.

Other stories associate it with the many headed monster killed by Heracles.
Which is interesting as an integral part of that particular myth was the regrowing of the heads. Two new for each chopped off.
One would think that all these heads would be important to the recognisability of the creature somehow.
Be that as it may…

The ancient babylonians listed it as MUL.DINGIR.MUŠ
“The serpent”
Or I would say they called it that…

The real truth is that the Babylonian serpent constellation merely loosely corresponded to Hydra as it is known today.
So, at least people have known to look for a snake in that area of the sky for a very long time, right.
Irregardless of exactly which stars constituted it.

A water snake to be precise.
A constellation so long, merely the act of fitting it onto the paper is a task in itself.
