Description Much is said about the primordial goddess of the sea, Tiamat.
In one version, she is said to have mated with Abzû, god of groundwater, and given birth to the younger babylonian gods.
This coins her as a creator goddess.

It also gives off the impression of her being a woman, with a woman's body.
And she is referred to as such too.
“The glistening one” she is called.

In other versions she is described as the very embodiment of primordial chaos. .
A dragon.
One of the earliest descriptions of a dragon to graze the collective memory.

It is suggested that the whole Tiamat mythos has two parts to it.

In the Enûma Elish she is both.
Taking on the dragon form only after her husband is killed.
Better to help her take revenge on her children, who in a bout of power hunger had made themselves his murderers.

This gets her killed by the storm god Marduk
Of her body he created the earth.
Of her tail, the milky way.

So, which is it?
Dragon or woman?
Or both?

You never know for certain with these old gods.
