Description This was made for the "Creature of the Week" contest at Concept Art.org. My first submission ever. I don't expect to win, but I'm happy with how it turned out.

The theme of the contest is a "buoy" creature. We have to draw a creatures that floats in the water, and give it a description...

"This creature lives out in the ocean, it uses the several airsacs located around it's main body to stay afloat, but can deflate them to submerge itself.

It hunts it's food by staying afloat and using the lighted bulbs to attract fish, and then grabs them with it's tentacles and eats them. The bulbs above water have the same effect but with birds or any other land creature.

This monster is a serious threat to any boatists or fishermen."

(that was so lame)

Photoshop + wacom, 8-10 hours.

Critique encouraged.

Quite lovecraftian. The smoothness of the picture is not making the creature scary or evil looking - not sure if this was done willingly or not! Great details on the monster and the water ( the whole scene seems to have been made with an aquarium, heh, which is pretty cool ). One bad thing is that the boat seems to be lacking men ( maybe because they have already been devoured? ).

Absolutely amazing. This has been in your gallery since the 12th of June and I've only gotten around to seeing it? There's something seriously wrong there.

But I really should stop endlessly praising your work and start offering constructive critique if I want to help you in some way.

I'm getting a real Metroid-esque feel from the top half of this creature, and I love the massive scale contrast between it and the boat. Actually, the creature sort of reminds me of a sea-based "Lavos", if you've ever played Chrono Trigger.

As for the art itself, I really like the techniques you've used in this piece. The transparent waves that actually show us a dynamic, 3D perspective; the streams of light at the back of the sea; the way the tentacles fade the farther they get away from the viewer in the ocean; and just the shading everywhere.

If I have to be critical of something, there's a spot in the middle-right part of the piece that strikes me as a little odd, perspective wise. The edge of the wave there, next to the boat, seems as if it's moving "down", like it continues to decline along a line in that direction, outside of the canvas. It's almost as is if all the water here is trapped behind a glass wall that dips off at that point. This is probably purely because of the specific view expressed at this angle, though.

Agian, amazing work; something I'd definitely buy a print of! (Hint, hint )

If you don't mind me asking, how did you do in the competition?

Thanks man. And yeah, it does look a little like Lavos I guess (I love Chrono Trigger).

And I didn't win, or come close really (but I did get some very good advice and comments). The stuff I see posted there is truly amazing, many of the artists there are already established illustrators. However, I'm gonna enter another one of their weekly contests with something much better. I feel like I've improved even since this.

Once again, thanks for the comment.

Have you exhibitions with your work? If not, try to...get your name out there man you've got the potential and skills to prove your a top artist.

Back to the art in question; damn impressive creature of the deep, really freaky looking. The light shining into the water for ripple effect is sweet there too.

... Um ... okay ... that's different

The picture is nicely done, extremely good job with the details.

... that thing's just weird ...

This is really incredible looking, and the design is absolutely original. I that the scene seems really peaceful despite the huge sea monster.
