I don't think its about segregation, i think it's more about showcasing the amazing female characters in a prominently male dominated medium. There are defiantly more male characters and more male players in the field of gaming, which is totally fine that men are the majority, but it's nice to honor and showcase the the minority of characters that maybe don't get as much recognition. But maybe that's just the way i see it.

First of all that medium is dominated by females as "there are more women playing games than men".
There might be more men playing so called "hard core" games but such arbitrary classification doesn't mean anything.
Second, there are plenty of female developers as well so it's not like there aren't any women working in the industry either.
So there are plenty of female consumers and plenty of them in the industry but now somehow we have to praise the "influential" women (or female pioneers or whatever) like that would be somehow rarity - such attitude is the definition of sexism.
We only have separate categories for men and women in areas where men and women can't compete on equal playing-field - like in 100m sprint and so on. In such cases it's understandable. But we don't have chess for men and chess for women because in such case it would hint like women would be too stupid to compete with men (which would be stupid *and* sexist). If we would be speaking about 100 pioneers regardless of their gender then that would be fine but once you start to point out women like they are so weak or maybe you might miss/overlook them in the list - like wtf ? That's literally degrading. Who the f**k would think that you have to point out female pioneers or else they wouldn't stand out in the crowd?
Of course there are plenty of female pioneers in video games for all those sexist r*****s who didn't know that already.
