Pretty brilliant idea there! Why didn't they consider this idea when "retiring" the old vehicles?

I would suspect there's no real interest in another space station, which is sad. The interesting thing about using shuttles, though is that you can boost them into a much higher orbit if you don't really care about bringing them back. Which could mean an intermediate stop in L4 or L5 for trips to the moon or mars. Kind of like a "cabin in the woods" on the way to a farther destination through the wilderness.
