Description
LASIREN
Lasiren is the Queen of the mermaids in the Vodou religion. She is one of many fish-tailed creatures that represent a culture clash of European colonists, African slaves and the native Taino in South America and the Caribbean Islands. She represents the goddess aspect of femininity and is sister to Danto, the mother aspect, Freda, the lover aspect, and LaBalenn, the whale. She is wife to Met Agwe, sailor and King of the Sea, and lover to Ogou, who represents war and power.
ORIGIN: Lasiren is one of many lwa, or loa, as all her fish-tailed kind are, which is to say they are mediators between the human world and the spiritual one. It is a job well suited to them, already straddling the gap between man and beast, and having a mixed race heritage as well. In many ways, Lasiren embodies the concept of opposite forces residing in one.
ITEMS: Lasiren is equipped with a magic mirror that acts as a portal into the subconscious world. She is often seen carrying a long golden trumpet, or one made of a conch shell, as well are her hair brush.
HOME: The undersea palace that Lasiren lives in is said to be full of sunken treasure.
MAGIC: Lasiren is psychic, can possess people, and has incredible healing powers.
TEMPERAMENT: As a representation of opposing forces, Lasiren is known to be moody, switching from one emotion to another in a flash. Like most mermaids, her mirror and hair brush are symbols of her vanity. But she doesn't spend nearly as much time adoring herself as others. She is very active, always in the middle of doing something important or fun. She protects human children who play in her waters, and is sought out by worshipers in need of a calming force in their lives. She likes to help people, especially women, by guiding them to her undersea domain where she teaches them her magical ways. These people are returned to shore either three days, or seven years later, miraculously dry, and appearing different in an uncanny sort of way. The expression, “my hat fell into the water” is used to denote such an experience. Lasiren can also temporarily possess people in order to ensure a happy outcome for their future.
LIKES: Lasiren loves music and dancing. Her favorite offerings include flowers, jewelry, doves, perfumes, pearls, honeydew, white wine, champagne, molasses, and syrup. Her favorite day of the week is Thursday, and her favorite colors are blue, green and purple.
DISLIKES: Lasiren considers all creatures of the sea her children, and is therefore disgusted by offerings of seafood.
REGIONAL KIN: Puerto Rican and Cuban stories tell the tale of seven sisters of particular promiscuity even for the local culture one of whom was named Aycayia. The sisters never wore clothes and satisfied the needs of all the men who came to them without ever promising themselves to anyone. It was their desire to remind the people around them not to take life so seriously, to have fun, and relax. However, many of the men who visited them began forgetting all about their wives, families, homes and work. Aycayia and her sisters were then banished to an island under the care of an old crone, in hopes that they would no longer be a distraction to the rest of the people. However, their devoted male followers thought nothing of taking their boats to the island to visit them there. And so, a giant whirlwind came to the island, flinging all its inhabitants into the sea. The seven sisters were cursed, becoming mermaids destined to roam the open sea alone for the rest of time, while the old crone was turned into a giant disgusting sea turtle. They were never seen again
