Description Spring Fever

Illustration for MY OWN article in "Health & Life" magazine - a Vietnamese magazine about health and medicine. This issue has been published during the Lunar New Year holiday.

Here's the link of the newspaper page featuring the artwork:

There you can see my name as the article author (and the pic also, though not clearly mentioned. My signature in the pic lied in the bottom left of the page due to the artwork having been flipped)

The light looks fine to me, since I get the impression that the light-energy is all around. Makes perfect sense in my opinion. I believe lighting is correct if it follows intention.

I think your recent artworks lack some lighting information, when I look at them from afar, they appear flat. You might want to check it.

Now painting is no more my top interest. I don't even have time for a doodle.

I made this pic for a normal health magazine, not a graphic one, and it has already been better than the editor's expectation.

Besides, this artwork is not supposed to be superb. I wouldn't get paid if I worked more on it (even the payment I got was actually just a representative sum). It was supposed to be simpler than this, but I'm just not good enough to do simple styles - where you have to be excellent in line art and rough coloring (for instance calligraphic style - which is actually very hard to perform).

I know, for a mag it's much better than expectation, but you did submit it on an art site didn't you ? I think you may want to pay attention to the overall lighting because it can be defined at the first stage of your painting, helping you finish it faster.

Or.. Idk, if the current method is easier for you, just do it.

Well, I'm still experimenting to figure out to achieve the realistic look I want. I have been tired of my current style, for the fact it hasn't got any better after a long time without changing. That's why I'd like to have a long break, with only one thing to do if I have time: experimenting.
Pay attention boys! Remember that the natural lightning in the REAL world is never clear-cut with just one or two prominent light sources as your exercises in class (When you learn 3D rendering, you'll see. This is the thing that makes VRay renderer more popular than others in 3D and architectural rendering, cuz it has the overall environmental light).

Back to my case. My favourite artist Der Jen (google this name if you don't know her) paints her characters' skin very softly with just little shadow and they look flat, but she still achieves an overall perfection. Same thing with many other artists. That's what I am experimenting for.

I know about realworld lighting. However I still think that the big picture should be rendered first in a painting. Here's why. Since Tet I've been watching youtube videos from Feng Zhu ( Singaporean concept artist ) and idrawgirls. They always tell their audiences to do so, and do it themselves in those videos. When the overall lighting is set, details can be added with bounce lights, reflections, textures... They have really strong contrast locally, and it doesn't hurt the set values from the beginning.

It's the industrial way though. There are lots of ways to achieve a desired look so I hope you can paint in like your favorite artist.

No problems at all.
