Description Did you know?......
The red, or lesser, panda is not actually a panda at all. It actually belongs to its own family group, Ailuridae. It was originally thought to be a small species of panda because of its facial markings, and its diet, which consists primarily and largely of bamboo.

Red panda.
Ailurus fulgens fulgens
Paignton Zoo.

Thanks for the fav
He's cute ! I didn't know what you said about the "family" of this animal, but actually, I was wondering why it was named "panda" because the 2 species are not really similar...so I concluded they might have made a mistake when they discovered the animal :-/
I'm joking. But I didn't know the name "Ailuridae". It may not be the same in france.
Btw here in France we call it "chinese panda" and I don't know why because big black and white pandas are chinese too, aren't they ? ...well

I didn't realise you called it that. The two names I have for it in French are Petit Panda and Panda Γ‰clatant (which I believe is bright when talking about fur?).
I would imagine that the family name Ailuridae is the same in French as it is a scientific name which are generally based on Latin and Greek.

You're right it must come from latin or greek but sometimes the original name is "changed" by the language and I think it's the case for this one because when I search it on the internet, I'm only sent to websites in english.
And I can't find the translation in french -_-'
And I had never heard the name "panda Γ©clatant" before so, you learnt me something about my own language

Check out the IUCN Red list
They are the official endangered list for all the world's species. They do not have every species but it's a great website. They have scientific names, as well as common names for different languages.

You're welcome And regarding the photo description - wow, very interesting. I thought too, that these animals were pandas. But, they must be at least closely evolutionarily related in some way?

And that's what I thought! I knew red pandas weren't pandas. Haha, I was just talking about that the other day.

Thanks.
I'm going to try and put a little more information about the subjects in my images with my deviations from now on. Not sure if I'll manage it, depends on time.

Yeah. That's the thing with uploading images. It can be pretty time consuming, but text definitely adds to the photo. Unfortunately, I don't know much about most of the animals that I photograph, haha.

Just look them up on the net. Loads of info to be found. I watch a lot of wildlife documentaries too, and I spend a lot of time in the countryside in the UK just observing what is around.
