Artemis in her polar Stealth outfit. This is another piece that I chose to exclude from my Sketchbook Β Β in favour of another drawing of her I did put in.Related content

Ah Artemis... one of the few characters I actually liked from the animated YJ. I'm sorry to be in the minority but YJ was one of those shows I really, really REALLY wanted to like and while there were things in it & about it that I did like I just couldn't get myself emotionally invested in the series or its story & after a while I found I just didn't really care about most of the characters & what went on in their lives or the big scary plot hovering in the shadows.Β
This is at least partially due to Cartoon Network's obvious desire to sabotage & destroy the series with crappy time slots & lack of promotion so they could get rid of it for a CGI Batman show that they also sabotaged & a rehash of Teen Titans that I have no real interest in - just as I have no real interest in anything they air now.Β
Still, great pic.Β

You are not wrong. I loved YJ but it was being washed down with delays in airing it and our general difficulty investing in the characters

The poor treatment and constant delays in airing YJ were incredibly disrespectful (and just plain stupid) on the part of the Cartoon Network executives and they should be fired for their gross incompetence.Β
Outside of the obvious corporate shenanigans... I don't know, despite all the bells & whistles and all the darker & edgier cleverness it always felt like there was something missing in YJ, something that just kept me from really connecting with the majority of its characters, which in turn made it hard to care about the overall plot. I think YJ had some of the same problems W&TXM had where character development wasn't distributed evenly among the cast - W&TXM was far worse in this regard, but I can't honestly say that all the YJ characters had equal development, nor did all the characters feel genuinely important. It left a sense of the mythos being taken for granted, for better or worse.Β
I also have to admit I would've liked to have seen more interaction between the younger heroes & their mentors. For a show where one of the key themes was legacies I never felt any real sincerity in the "emotional bonds" between the young heroes & their mentors, since most of the adult heroes felt flat & vapid (Superman probably got it worst of all but that's another rant for another time).Β
Having said all that, Artemis was an awesome character. And despite my complaints I do feel bad for the show's fans, since I've seen shows I liked get canned before they could go the whole 9 yards. Hell, 10 years later I'm still annoyed at how the 2002 reboot of HE-MAN & THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE bit the dust the way it did, though at least that series didn't end on an obnoxious cliffhanger. This combined with the shoddy treatment of the Thundercats reboot kind of makes me glad that we currently don't have reboots of other 80s cult properties like Silverhawks, Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers & Robotech in the works, since Lord knows they'd be treated badly as well (especially Silverhawks, as owned by WB, would have the same misfortune of having its reboot go to Cartoon Network where it would bludgeoned to death without half a chance).Β

Perhaps if it were not cancelled they would have fleshed out the team properly and made up for the big time skip they did between seasons

Yeah maybe, maybe not. We'll never know... but I heard the show-runners Greg Weisman & Brandon Vietti were planning *another* time skip & I'm not sure how that would have worked given that ending. I didn't like the time skip, just one of many things that ended up being a turn off with the show, cheating us out of more character relationship building (there's a reason why Superman & Superboy's 'brotherly banter' in ALIENATED doesn't ring true).Β
Apparently there was a tie in comic that contained a lot of additional info on the show's characters (background info that can be found on the YJ Wikia page), the show-runners say it wasn't essential to enjoying the show but it sounds like a fair amount of important stuff got dumped there. Why should we spend money on a rinky-dink tie-in comic for info that the show itself should have covered.Β
I suppose it's possible that maybe shows/films/etc. about kid/teen/tween protagonists just aren't my thing at this point, but then again I really enjoyed AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER which featured an equally young cast of heroes & heroines, as does its sequel series Legend of Korra, while "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" and "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" are among my favorite films by Hayao Miyazaki (I'm a casual fan of his work at best) so perhaps it really was just something in the writing of the show itself - which is too bad since I grew up with Greg Weisman's "Gargoyles" and came to enjoy his "Spectacular Spider-Man", so it's a shame I didn't enjoy this venture (gotta say though he should have known better than to end season 2 the way he did).Β

Well Greg is onto STAR WARS Rebels now. Maybe that will be good. Star Wars needs something good to happen to it

Yeah I heard about that. Thing is I never really bothered following any of the animated/CGI-ized Clone Wars shows. The prequels kinda turned me off to anything new from the Star Wars franchise. I know some fans are totally hyped for the soon to be helmed by J.J. Abrams Star Wars films but I have no real interest in them either (I'm in the minority that didn't care for his Star Trek reboot - and I'm not even a die hard Star Trek-er so I can't say it's a puritanical thing). But that's just me. Sorry to bring down the "Artemis Snow Job" with bad vibes.Β

I also prefer the original Star Wars trilogy. I wish Lucas had just left it alone after ROTJ - or given it to filmmakers who actually cared about doing more films & doing them right instead of just doing a flat, heartless cash grab.Β
I haven't seen a whole lot of Abrams work but his Star Trek reboot left me... not entertained. :shrugs:
