The damage was unrepairable as the comics put it. Batgirl (Babs) was sagging in readership and interest and Moore thought this an opportunity to do something shocking.

But wasn't there at least one story line where Oracle got extensive treatment, and could eventually walk again?Β Or like in ARROW, Felicity Smoak could walk again after spinal damage due to some sort of nano-implant?Β Not to rag on Babs or anything, but it just sort of felt like...I dunno, that she just gave up...

I actually like her as Oracle...she was a good role model... and was a stronger character for it

Oh of course, not say that Oracle isn't a great character.
It's just that the only Batgirl that I knew growing up was the ANIMATED SERIES one, and then realizing that the Joker crippled her in the comics came as quite the shock when I found out later on.

I never got how they left her like this. Β Not how the Joker could cripple her like he did, but why they never fixed it. Β I mean, it was an injury to the spinal cord, something Bruce Wayne walked off when Bane did it to him. Β And even if Barbara canβt summon the same willpower as Bruce, she is still chummy with heroes with ready and easy access to advanced technology, future technology, alien technology, and magic. Β Is she the poster child for βReed Richards is Uselessβ? Β Because she should be.

No...I'm pretty sure Reed Richards is the poster child for that trope. I mean it is in his name. XD
Yeah it does seemed kind of forced, but there are limitations & sometimes writers want to go with a realistic view to show that sadly not everyone can get the luxury of such things. But that's okay, she could still help fight crime while in a wheel chair.
... And then DC reconnected it away because screw good character development & wonderful writing. Comics sucks these days.

They should`ve kept Barbara as Oracle and Stephanie as Batgirl instead of retconning Babs to beΒ a teenager with an ugly outfit.
Because now in essence The Killing Joke which was back in `88 and what made Babs become Oracle didn't happen which is incredibly stupid on DCs part to do.

I agree. What "The Killing Joke" did to Babs might have been bad.... but her story of becoming Oracle and still being relevant is a great story of success

They don't get as lucky as Marvel I think. Spidergwen works though she shouldn't.... but Dc messes up say Batgirl Cass (Not that I liked her) with her 52 retcon

Marvel is just as bad or worse. They give Carol Danvers a seriously god awful ugly costume then she has an almost male looking body.
Spiderwoman too gets an ugly RACING outfit and gets knocked up by the Porcupine or was it Urich who cares! Jess is a mom now which is dumb. Squirrel Girl is absolutely stupid and her artist cant draw female bodies for nothing since her friend Nancy looks like a man.Β She-Hulk is a psycho now and almost EVERY heroine has a damn jumpsuit. Not to mention the Fantastic Four is no more.
