This was from the DA account of my great friend, Matthew Anderson. It is a picture of the SS Columbia, an 1880 passenger steamship who had the revolutionary honor of being the 1st time electric lights were used and commercially outside of Thomas Edison's Menlo Park Lab. Fate seemed to dislike this ship a lot: She has collided with ferries, barges, rafts, her hull was vulnerable to cracking and she destroyed a drydock in the San Francisco earthquake. The end came on July 21, 1907 when the Schooner San Pedro stoved the ship off Shelter Cove with 88 people lost. Aside from the Punta Gorda Light in Cape Mendocino, no memorial has been established for this historical ship or her deceased.
