This time, it's a sad, sad one...Where we'll see Luster Dawn's last moments...

HEADCANON

A head-canon or alternate universe, if you wish; a time long after Princess Twilight has been crowned the ruler of Equestria when Princess Celestia and Luna had retired, Twilight was now responsible along with her best friends to take care of the land.
Yet as time when on and her appearance never changed compared to everyone else, is it possibly that other then being a Princess and an Alicorn; maybe she was more different then she thought. Immortality made her stand out among any-pony else. And with immortality, comes great happiness and great grieve...

Which comes to this shriveled moment; likely a sight and feeling Princess Celestia felt in her time of taking students and pupils underneath her wing. Out of all the students she taught, only one that she personally taught gained the availability of immorality through Alicornization. Twilight Sparkle taking responsible over Celestia's 'School of Magic', she gathered further interest and sympathy towards one pupil that needed her the most in learning what the magic of friendship can mean.
And truly, she was a brilliant teacher. Perhaps the best. But unfortunately to her own feelings, Luster Dawn didn't have the open opportunities that she did even if she secretly tried. Luster Dawn was grateful, happy, and overflowed with joy at her mentor's attention and love.
That's all she ever wanted and Princess Twilight Sparkle gave her more then she could have ever hoped. Even until the very end when her skin wrinkles and her mane lightened, Twilight Sparkle was at her side.

STORY

MY FAITHFUL STUDENT

Laughter and playful giggles echoed warmly around the highlighted hallways of Canterlot Castle from two freshly arrived mares after a pleasant outing from an evening trip to the Hippogriff Kingdom.
Princess Twilight Sparkle and Luster Dawn with a new rose in their cheeks entered excitedly into the castle's throne room with the clap of their traveled hooves greeting the grand hall with an open welcome. Politely allowing Luster Dawn inside, Twilight's smile sweetened in the eye to eye present of her faithful pupil and dearest friend.

"I've had a wonderful time today, Luster Dawn. That evening trip to the Hippogriff Kingdom was a brilliant idea! Honestly, Luster Dawn... Thank you."

Twilight thanked gratefully, leaning forward as she embraced the pink Unicorn with loving eyes. Luster Dawn gave a quiet chuckle which coursed her smile to widen, firmly defining her acknowledged face in stiffer features.

'It's truly not a problem, Princess. I had a wonderful time too, it has been so long since we last any personal time.'

Luster Dawn presented softly as Twilight Sparkle glided herself towards the throne, taking a moment to appropriate the stained glass windows a bit longer before the words of the unicorn sparked a new conversational line in mine. With a open smile and surprised eyes her mind wandered to the memories of the day as new ideas of trips and activities came to mind.

'Oh, it has, haven't it? Goodness, by my mane, we must do this again!'

The purple Alicorned realized as she picked up with her magic a listed scroll from the side of the throne and her favourite quill, the brown feathery feel against the levitating magic making her stomach jump for a brief moment as Luster Dawn moved out of her point of view behind her. Glancing down at the scroll was many different dates, to-dos, plans, and duties needed to be completed by the end of the week; making time for the trip with Luster Dawn was costly but well worth it! She'll just need to plan 12 more times ahead!

'When do you think we can do this, again? Do you happen to have a time when you'll be available, I can write down a time! I'm sure I can make some room on my calendar. You haven't met Cadence yet, have you? We could have afternoon tea together! Oh and there's Flurry Heart too! I haven't see her in a couple of weeks, they'll be so pleased to finally meet you! Oh, it'll be so excitin-!'

Princess Twilight gleamed with an even brighter attitude, her magic practically glowing with happiness thinking of all the friendly ideas coming to mind. Yet what made her stop in her track of speech was something she'd never expected, the bang of a fleshy body bounced in her ears which coursed her tall, elegant body to twist in Luster Dawn's duration. Luster Dawn was on the floor, her unable to get up as her hoove was pressed firmly against her struggling chest. The look across her eyes suggested she was finding it hard to stay awake.
Almost instantly, almost. The Alicorn's body rushed to Luster's side is major shock and concern, the drop to the floor startled her, it made every cell in her limbs burn as the shock coursed her magic to pop out of existence. The quill clattered clumsily to the floor as the parchment followed soon after, Twilight gently put her armoured hoof against the shoulder of Luster Dawn and her lack of response made her heart freeze against her stuffed lungs.

'Oh dear Celestia! Are you alright, Luster Dawn??'

She questioned without an answer, Luster Dawn could barely move. Her face crumpled and slowly relaxing from a pained expression that made Twilight feel like a ghost, the unicorn's breathes were shallow, difficult, and slow. Controlled, yet dangerously raspy. The Princess waited for a few seconds before asking again.

'Luster Dawn?...'

As the sun was beginning to set, it would need to be moved to be replaced by the moon. But Twilight couldn't do it, not when her friend was like this. It has been 5 minutes and Luster Dawn's breathing has only gotten worse, however she had managed with the help of Twilight to lay on her stomach to ease the airflow.
Tears were already streaming down the princess's face, making her rosy face a deep crimson as fear and sadness long replaced the spark of happiness that trotted inside of her chest. With a protecting wing, she was patiently waiting for further help as she sent a scroll for Spike and Emergency Services. Luster Dawn was aware, even through all her difficult breathing she was holding her mentor's hoof with a weak smile across her wrinkled lips. Did the Unicorn look somehow older showing that sad smile?

'I-I'm so sorry, Luster Dawn. I-I promise help is coming soon, you just try and stay as comfortable as possible. Are you comfortable? Is there anything I can do? There must be something, mustn't there? I might have a spell to help the breathing-"

Twilight offered desperately but to her saddened observation the unicorn gave a small shake of her head as she opened her lips very carefully.

'N-No...N-No it's okay...I like this...Y-You're warm, it's easing the pain a little. P-Princess..'

Luster Dawn explained in a weak croak, Twilight nearly began sobbing out loud from her dangerously fatal sounding voice; with a sniff she tried to contain as must composer as possible even if her nose ran along with the streams of tears that escaped and threatened to burst.

'H-Hey, there's n-no need for formal g-greeting Luster. Y-You can just call me Twilight, w-we're friends after all...'

Twilight managed a sad smile herself, that made the unicorn give her own weakened smile back. Feeling the unicorn's body leaning for support into the large immorality body of the Princess, Twilight could feel every breath against her skin and her listening become as sharp as a hark's. A dozen seconds went by with just the sound of raspy inhales and exhales that appeared to get calmer each fraction of time that goes by. The silent was broken suddenly by Luster Dawn herself, managing with surprising ease to ask Princess Twilight a simple request.

'P-Princess...I-I mean Twilight. I-It's okay...T-This is all I-I want...Y-You know that song you sang to me when I first went to Ponyville? The one you sang for me with your friends to teach me about friendship? Could...Could you sing that for me whilst we wait? It's my favourite...'

Luster Dawn asked kindly, tinting her head up as the Princess's head that was waiting at the door went to her. A moment of consideration spread between the two of them, a moment of shared heart-beats, and a moment of warmth spreading over them started as Twilight's worried and scared features was greeted with another feeling. Pain.
With a smile that could made the morning birds cry, she nodded with a sniffle as the frozen sun settling light warmed the cool decoration around them.

'O-Of course, L-Luster Dawn...E-Everything for you...'

She muttered, taking a slow controlled breath as decades of formal practice washed over the ruler. It was going to be difficult but...How could she not do this for Luster Dawn

'When I-I started out, I was unsure
I-I thought I knew all that I needed, didn't know what to expect.
But when my walls came down...*Gulp* I saw the truth...
All along something was missing
And I think...we'll see it, too.'

'This is where the magic...happens
This is where the magic l-lives.
Our friendships weave together stronger
The bonds grow deeper, lasting...L-Lasting longer
....And the greatest spell you'll know
Is h-how the M-Magic of Friendship...

Twilight was about to finish before noticing the complete silent that stilled the room, only her own breath could be heard and her sound of the birds outside slowed her out of her singing state. She wasn't looking down, she had wandered her eyes to the windowpane that shun a light that burned her swollen eyes. She couldn't feel anything. She couldn't hear anything from Luster Dawn.
She couldn't bare to look...
Softly as a dying flower her head lowered and she rested her head on top of Luster Dawn's head, the silver and lightened hairs tinkling her nostrils and catching her tears. Her frontal legs carefully wrapped the still body as if it was made out of glass with the wing acting as a warm blanket. With one last push, the alicorn's quietly sobbing eyes braved themselves to open to go along with the final word of the song that finally broke her professionalism.
That finally broken her grieve scarred heart...That finally broke her...

'H-How the M-Magic...O-Of F-Friendship...G-Grows.'
