Description I always take pictures of the area around me to use as a ref for a background and yet I never have! At least until now! So the background was loosely reffed from a picture I took. This is my new character Dare! I've been working on it off and on for about a week. Still not 100% and so I can't work on stuff for long, but I picked my way through this and am pretty happy with it. :3

I like the soft painting of the background, especially how you blended colors into each other.

Jeez, I need to work on dynamic poses. This is incredible and I love the background! I've never thought of taking my own pictures to use as background references. I live at the beach and there are some incredible sunsets I've seen! I might just start snapping a few pictures to use later

Dynamic poses are so much fun! Thank you! I am so glad you like it! Ha ha. I always take pictures to use for my own references, but I usually forget about them. You should! It's a good idea.

Look so nice! I love everything in this! The background, the character's pose and the "perspective" of the character, omg xD

HOLY FREAKIN' CRAP WOW!
This is just BEYOND GORGEOUS, whoahhhhh... how, HOW in the name of all that is holy can you do backgrounds like that?!?!?!
So smooth, beautiful, well-lit and subtle, yet detailed and realistic with your own flair thrown in there, and atmospheric-as-heck to boot!

And Dare looks like SUCH a cool character - love the shading and his face markings, and those slightly floppy ears look super cool!
I would say though that it looks like you've used a new style here - his face looks damned perfect in it! (although I would say that even with perspective, something looks off about the paws very slightly, and maybe his shoulder - idk, the pads seem a bit too thick to me, but that's 90 times more likely to be a case of my eyes playing tricks on me as opposed to having anything to do with the negligible chance of your near-perfect art and anatomy skills having something wrong :'D)

Your backgrounds have improved immensely recently though, I think I've already said so, but HA, I'll say it again! Because you're just too awesome.

Thank yooouuuu!

I like doing backgrounds more than anything else now. xD

Thank you! I am so glad you like him! I think it's probably the lines. I dunno if it's a new style or what. I did shade him differently because I've been sick and I actually worked on him, sketch-lighting and shading on my laptop (which only has Sai and I usually use photoshop for shading and all that stuff) and it's kinda awkward working on, especially with the tablet on the arm rest on the couch next to me. xD I think his shoulder is what bugs me the most. It crossed my mind to either fix the lines or throw some heavier shading on that spot to see what worked. And it's very possible that his pawpads are too thick but I liked the way they looked so I didn't care if it was perfect. His shoulder on the other hand... x3

I am so glad you like my backgrounds though! It makes me very happy!

You're very welcome, and it shows in the passion you've put into the bgs, I SERIOUSLY, SEEERIOUSLY need to work on mine though, haha.

You're welcome, and yes, the lines definitely look different, but they're just as nice - it's just a different look!

Ah, at least I'm not offending you then by wondering if the shoulder isn't quite right, I was wary of that. It's only VERY slightly off anyway, and I guess it is true that some dogs have much thicker pads than others I suppose - my boy has huuuuuuge paws but rather thin pads, whereas our dear departed springer spaniel/golden retriever had much thicker pads, so hey! Why not make it a character trait?

Of course I love them - teach me, TEACH ME PLEASSSSSSSE!

rofl! You should paint them more! It's fuuun! I know you're busy though. I can relate to this feeling.

I dunno if I'll ever do the lines like this again, but it's fun to try new things!

Naaah. You wouldn't offend me unless you were mean about it. Ha ha. I should make his pawpads a character trait. x3

I don't know hooooow. D:

I most definitely should! Ha, I need the practise, that much is clear! And funny you should say about painting them more... yesterday an idea for a speedpainting came into my head, so I sketched it out, and it has a BG. (won't colour it for a while though probably - I've had a bit of a colouring-phobia for a while from hating my shading style and lack of skills, plus I've got TONNES of revision to go through before exams... not to mention other stuff going on now that isn't pleasant and shall probably be explained in a journal soon...)

And I REALLY like how the lines came out, I'd like to see that lineart style again some time! <3

Aww, I'm glad to hear it - all of my comments are MEANT to be constructive, but I know sometimes the artist takes a freak-attack if someone dares to criticise them, either that or gets REALLY upset and takes it personally - I didn't think you would, but I've seen it often enough to worry about it.

And that would be cool - something that would make him a bit more unusual and unique, a nice touch! <3

Umm... try? Because ha, I seriously need to improve bucketloads at backgrounds and at shading stuff.

Ha ha. But you can't get better at coloring if you never color!

I'm glad! I kinda like them but I dunno. Maybe I'll use that line style as I see fit. xD Yeah. I know. Some people don't like to hear it and get really upset. I usually don't say anything unless people are actually asking for it because I don't want to upset anyone.

Vannjaren In reply to InstantCoyote [2014-04-09 11:17:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I'm well aware of that - which is why I intend to get colouring again as soon as exam revision calms down a bit!

You're welcome, and yes, of course I love your usual style too - as you say, I think it's just a matter of choosing what style to do on what drawing.
True, I don't understand that - if someone critiqued something on my art, either I'd agree with them and try to do better at it next time, or I'd explain WHY it's that way if it was intentional; as crits may concern my species, so I'll explain the design and why it's that way. Fairly simple really, and nothing to get uptight about... but try telling some people.

Woo hoo!

Ha ha. Yeah, right? x3 Some people throw up their defenses so fast and they get the pikes out and it's like "woah woah. I am not trying to be mean. D:" And yeah, sometimes things just look off to people when they're supposed to be that way. Ha ha. Like Duhgare's species too. Broken weird big cat dog things. I dunno. Oh my gosh and I keep making Sherakai fluffier!! I need to upload some sketches of him. He's now not only cream but he's long haired! LOL

Urgh yes, I know! :'D
It's all like "Grab yer torch and pitchfork, there's a critic on the horizon!"
And oh don't I know it - Krovens are notorious for that. People always mistaking them for doggehs... Or commenting on their build - which, honestly, I CAN see why - but it IS all explained by their skeleton and muscle structure, as well as their species origins and metabolism, so it makes sense AFTER reading stuff, but I don't mind that too much(nowhere near as much as the "dog" thing... I mean seriously, since when did dogs have holes in their front legs, flattened skulls, sabre diamond teeth, long flexible tailsΒ and an extra joint in their hindlegs?) - after all, I'm aware Krovens are strange-looking beasts at the best of times, so that sort of thing doesn't make me angry.
Gotta laugh at some of the comments, I think one regarding Reiker... "Sweet God, how does it digest food?".

Ooooh, sounds SO beautiful, argh, why must I always want to pet things that could bite my hand off?!?! Look forward to seeing more of him now, he sounds such a pretty boy. <3

Also, any ideas on your Renvor boy yet, if you'd like to discuss colour schemes or such? (ha, maybe I'll submit some Renvor sketches to scraps in a while to help you, since it might take too long to get the whole ref done)

InstantCoyote In reply to Vannjaren [2014-04-19 00:06:43 +0000 UTC]

ROFL. The Reiker comment. That is hilarious. xD

I haven't had any ideas yet. I think once I see the finished ref I might be more bold. I'm intimidated by their anatomy still. ^_^'

Vannjaren In reply to InstantCoyote [2014-04-19 10:01:52 +0000 UTC]

I know - it maybe wasn't intended as a compliment or anything, but it was so funny that it just made my day!

Ah yes, that might help I guess - whilst revision of ultimate pain-in-the-butt-nessΒ hasn't been helping with my ATTEMPTS to finish the ref(nearly finished the sketches though!), I might be able to submit to scraps soon the different full-body views of the Renvor to help you - front view, side view, back view and top view(yes, Krovens from above... not a view many things get to see. :'D Not perhaps the most exciting view either - furry line with hair really, particularly KΓ₯rstatt. :'D)
And don't be intimidated - your anatomy skills are fantastic, and I'm sure you'd be able to get a grasp on KD anatomy really quickly - yes, I will admit they're weird, but you can do it!
Ha, nobody has ever made a successful full-body drawing of a Kroven yet without at least one redline or a looooot of critiquing and tweaking... wait, that's probably not sounding reassuring! But what I was trying to say is - yep, they're tricky if you're not used to them, but don't feel bad if you don't get it first try - although I think you might be able to once you see the reference sketches.
