Description
Painter X and Photoshop CS | 7 hoursGeez, what did dA do to the categories... I swear, they just keep messing those things around.
Anyway. The background is LAME, but that's because it's a placeholder. The mermaid is going to be part of my website layout, when I get around to re-doing it. And I'm going to make a better background too... probably soon.
The actual mermaid. Well. I like some parts. I like the texture on her tail-fin. I like her hair. I sort of like her multicoloured eyes. I like the hands (hell yeah! I draw hands I'm happy with!)
What's lacking is what I didn't have the energy to add. Scales on her tail, and some scaling on her skin. A decent background. Some more extreme colours (I'm a colour junkie, okay?).
However. This works for me. Learning more with every picture about this 'lineless' style.

Critique you wanted, critiqueyou get.
let me start off by telling you that the watermark really made me raise my eyebrow. Not because it's there, but because you used Comic Sans MS. I'd suggest changing to a different font, for a more professional look.
The image itself I can't really have much criticism on. You went for a stylised look, and pulled it off very well. I would've liked to see the lightrays being used more though, perhaps to create some odd shadows on the figure.
Another suggestion I could bring to the table concerns the texture un her lower (fish) body. It's rather uniform as it is, to a point where it's just flat. If you'd try to making it curve with the shape, it'd bring it out so much better.
Still, congrats on a lovely image. Not my style of imagery, but that's just personal taste.
Note that this post is meant as constructive, and I by no means intend to humiliate or demean your work. I'm merely trying to help improve the talent that's there.

Thanks!
I'll take your advice about the watermark in the future. There's a long story behind it, that doesn't really need to be told >
The lightrays aren't staying, I just threw the background/rays on so I could submit this as a WIP.. the background is (hopefully) going to be a lot more indepth.
I agree about the texture. I did it... liked it... then didn't like it on second looking.
Thanks for taking the time to give a really thought out comment

Like the colours (green skin, quite Junko Mizuno), and the odd coloured eyes....

Yeah, I was trying to get a bit of a freaky, otherworldly feeling to her with the eyes and the skin.
