Thanks I dropped the background vines back in three stages (as per your instructions) but I think perhaps I could have done it more as it still looks a bit flat.

I think you got a good amount of depth out of it, turned out nice. You don't always have to push things back as well, its up to your judgement as an artist of what could use it in a scene. In this one for mine I ended up leaving the vines fairly close together, it just depends on the circumstances of what is going on in the image.

fair enough, it's fascinating to see how people have handled the gap between the background and midground. The lines don't give many clues so quite a bit of variation amongst the colourists.
