HTTYD- A Misunderstanding.

Maybe it was the altitude getting to him, but Hiccup had just seen Astrid blow by him on her dragon, Freya. And when he had seen her, she looked to be crying.

"Toothless-" Hiccup began, but was cut off as the dragon dove sharply to pickup speed, when he reached a desired amount, he leveled out, following hot on the tail of the speeding Nadder and girl.

"I know I must be going crazy." Hiccup said, thinking out loud to
himself. Toothless began to angle himself downward again, heading to a landing in his grotto. Hiccup saw no trace of Astrid or Freya there. "Why are you stopping, Toothless?"

The dragon's response was to slap him with an ear. As the dragon landed in the grotto, he was distinctly reminded or the time he had skidded across the water after their first flight, if it could be called that.

Hiccup remained sitting on Toothless, mostly to avoid walking on his prosthetic leg, which he had dramatically improved on, following Gobber's design. The base was now much wider and the pure metal spring design Hiccup had encased in a tube and covered with tanned sheepskin, in attempt to reduce the sound. Despite all the improvements, Hiccup found it to be a pain, literally.

"Alright Toothless, explain yourself." Hiccup demanded from the dragon. Again, Toothless whacked Hiccup with his ear. "What are you-"

Hiccup stopped in mid-sentence. He heard a distant sound, the distinct sound of sobbing. Full on, no holds barred, hiccup inducing sobbing.

Toothless looked back at Hiccup and motioned his head toward to entrance to the grotto. Hiccup nodded, and Toothless walked him just to the edge of the entrance. There, he dismounted and limped his way
out of the enclosed space.

Outside, the sound of the sobbing grew louder. Hiccup followed it until he reached a large rock, on the other side of which, he saw the back of a Nadder, with the special saddle Hiccup had made just for
Astrid. The ornate one.

"Astrid," Hiccup came around the side of the rock, finding the girl crying uncontrollably into her hands. "what's wrong?"

He hadn't expected an answer, and didn't receive one. Freya nudged Astrid's arm, in an attempt to comfort the girl. Hiccup sat down against the rock, leaving a small distance in between himself and the girl who held his heart. It hurt him not being able to comfort her, but he knew he'd only angrily be pushed away from her, making things worse. So, he sat. He sat and waited. He waited as she cried unabashed, never
lifting her hands from her face. In the corner of his vision, Toothless crept into view. The dragon curled up a few feet from Hiccup, eyes on the two humans, head on his forepaws. Hiccup wasn't  sure how long he waited, but finally Astrid's sobbing slowed, and her breathing evened out. When she removed her hands from her face, she drew her knees up to her chest, and rested her chin on them, locking
her hands around her legs.

Only then did Hiccup dare approach. Cautiously, he placed his arm around her shoulders, and pulled her against him. After a time she  spoke.

"Hiccup...I'm sorry." she said.

"For what? If anything, I should be apologizing. I meant to come see you yesterday, but I was busy repairing some stuff Toothless spilled water on."

"Like this?" Astrid's voice wavered, threatening to break into sobbing again. She pulled a sheet of paper from one of the pockets on her overskirt. Hiccup saw tear stains on the paper, and he realized what
it was. It was one of his writings. One written in blind fury and sadness. One of the ones he had copied over to new paper after Toothless's tail had knocked over a glass of water on the bound
notebooks he kept beside his desk.

When he unfolded the paper, he recognized it as the one detailing the abuses and insults he had endured at the hands of the people his age. He scanned over it, and realized it was the page dealing with the girl
sitting beside him. And he saw the lines scrawled out, detailing the time she had told him that the village would be better off without him, and that he should go kill himself by jumping off the nearest cliff. Or the time that she had struck him with the handle of her broken axe because he tripped her when he fell, or the time... Hiccup broke his eyes away from the paper.

"Is that all?" Hiccup asked.

"Isn't it enough...?" Astrid sounded again on the verge of tears. "There were pages of this, PAGES Hiccup! And just reading all of the abuses you've been through...how...and then reading about what I did
to you...some things I had forgotten, like the cliff part...and it hurts me to know I caused you that kind of pain Hiccup! It hurts to know that all these years, I've just been putting you down and hurting you, and then you just gave all THIS to  us!" Astrid said, gesturing in an arc at the dragons.

"To remember all my past injustices to you, and the fact...that you once stood on a cliff...and considered what I said...and and...mph!"

Astrid found her lips locked with Hiccup's. He pressed against her, almost violently trying to convey his emotions with her, his entire body flushed with heat that she could feel and he kneeled over her, lips locked with hers. Her heart soared and hurt even more at the same time. Finally, he broke his lips from hers, then wrapped his skinny arms around her. Embracing her as close as he could.

"Astrid, that was never meant for you to see. I never meant for anyone to see that. Especially you. I've already forgiven every small thing that anyone has done to me. I might have had the worst fortune in the world, but a small bit of luck changed that when I found Toothless. And because of him, I have you."

Hiccup placed his arms on her shoulders, holding her at arms length, and smiled his most honest smile at her. Her expression was slightly shocked. She didn't expect this. In truth, she hadn't known what to expect. Sadness? Anger? No...not this though. This utter forgiveness and entire LACK of bitterness. Something anyone else would have held...anyone but Hiccup. And all because fate had tossed him a few bones.

"Hiccup, you can't be serious. I gave you a splinter in your ear and a bruise the size of a grapefruit. And you said you couldn't sleep for a week because of them!"

"Astrid, how did you get this anyways?" Hiccup asked. Suddenly, Astrid's surprised face changed to something like abashment, and she looked down at her feet, now folded into a sitting position. "Well...I came to see you this morning after your dad left, and I couldn't find you, but you left this stuff out on your desk, and I was curious..."

Hiccup sighed. All of it was just a large misunderstanding. Everything. "And how much did you read?"

"Well, I skimmed the one about Snotlout, and realizing what it was, I looked for mine..." Astrid said, meeting his gaze.

"Then I'm glad that this was all you found. There was a notebook right next to these paper that has all my lo-" Hiccup cut himself off midsentence, face going pale, body going tense as he turned to look at
Astrid.

Slowly, a realizing smile spread across her face.

"All your love poems?" Astrid asked, teasingly. Hiccup groaned. He knew he had done it now. He was never going to hear the last of it. Especially if she got her hands on THAT notebook, which he knew, she
was going to try to get.

Astrid leaned her head against his shoulder, smiling to herself.

Eventually Astrid stood up, claiming she had chores to do. Hiccup watched her leave with Freya, before mounting Toothless. The pair flew over the forest until dusk.

After returning home, Hiccup discover a note on his desk, in place of the notebook filled with all of his thoughts and feeling about Astrid. All it had was Astrid's name and a smiley face on it.

"Crap!"
