Chapter 2

After a long internal struggling between his need to help Pit and his concern for his own safety, Link found himself standing outside of Ike’s door. The blonde shuffled his feet and sighed. Jeez… If Ike can make an Angel cry, I can only imagine what he’s going to do to me if I piss him off.

But in the end, Link placed Pit’s well-being over his own, and if facing Ike was the only way to restore the Angel’s smile, he would gladly do it. The Hylian pounded on the mercenary’s door. “Ike! I’d like a word with you!” he yelled.

“Come in,” the bluenette called, his voice hollow.

It took the Hero off guard that he had been invited in without conflict. Slowly, Link opened the door to the larger swordsman’s room and found it in utter chaos. Drawers were pulled out on the floor and empty, packed bags were piled on each available surface, since the floor was so cluttered, and Ike was laying on the bed with the crook of his arm covering his eyes.

“Are you leaving?”

Although the answer seemed obvious, Link had to start somewhere. He slowly approached the bluenette, doing his best not to trip. As he neared the bed, his keen eyes noticed a worn sheet of parchment on the nightstand, so he walked over and read the open text. The message was grim.

Ike-

He’s gotten so much worse. Rhys has done everything he can, but the fever won’t let up. He’s not going to last. He’s requested that you stay at the tournament. If you’re wondering why, it’s because he says ‘You aren’t a healer, and being here would only torture you.’

You know how he is. Even near death, he’s as stubborn as a mule. I’m sorry, Ike. I’ll keep you informed for better or for worse.

Link blew out a long breath and turned to the distraught Brawler. “Shit…”

Ike had lifted his arm was nodding in agreement. “I don’t care about what he wants,” he explained, placing his arm back over his eyes. “He doesn’t deserve to suffer alone. Even if I can’t heal him, I’m going to be there for him. He’s been there for me my whole life, and it’s time I did the same for him… Sorry to blast you with my personal problems. Did you want something?”

It took the Hylian a moment to remember his original intentions for coming to the mercenary. “Oh… er… I ran into Pit in the garden… He was pretty upset, and I think it may have to do with what’s going on with you?”

The mercenary swore and then sighed. “He came in while I was trying to pack… I’d just read the first line or so of my letter, so,” he gestured with his hand to indicate how flustered and upset he had been at the time. “I wasn’t in the best of moods… and he started asking me all these questions and begging me not to go. I dunno, I boiled over, and I guess I let him have it pretty good…”

Link didn’t say anything for the longest time; anger had given way to understanding, even though the Hylian hated to see Pit cry. “I’m sorry, Ike… Lemme know if there’s anything I can do to help.”

The bluenette nodded and the Hero left. After taking a few breaths to calm his frayed nerves, the blonde hurried off to find the beautiful Angel to let him know that it had all been a misunderstanding. He found Pit in his room, still down from his earlier encounter with the mercenary.

“Hey,” Link called softly, peeking past the door which had been left slightly ajar. “Can I come in?”

“Of course,” the cherub replied softly, scooting over on his bed to make room for the Hylian.

Link nodded and entered, taking a seat beside the youth. “I’d like to start by saying that Ike wasn’t upset with you earlier… You really didn’t do anything wrong.”

The boy’s eyes lit up with delight. “Ike is not mad at me? This is wonderful news!”

Honestly, Pit, who could ever be mad at you? You spend your time bringing beauty to this world, who could possibly be mad at you for that?

“Yeah, I spoke to Ike, and he wasn’t angry, just sad…”

Pit scooted closer and leaned his head on the other archer’s shoulder to better look him in the eyes. “What has upset Ike? I don’t want him to leave…”

“Well, someone very close to him is very sick, and I don’t think that they’re going to get any better,” the blonde tried to explain, not sure how much the Angel knew about mortals and their fear of dying. “Ike wants to go back to his home to be there when this person… passes away.”

The cherub’s face scrunched up as he tried to make sense of this new information. “Did Ike not like this person for him to want to watch them die?”

“Uh, actually it’s the opposite. Ike cares about then a whole lot, but he can’t make the person get better. He’s just going to be there for the person, even though it makes Ike sad that they’re going to die… Does that make sense?”

The brunette nodded. “Ike does not want his friend to pass on. This makes him angry-sad, so that’s why he yelled at me… Perhaps—“

Pit didn’t stay to finish his thought; instead, he jumped up and started rifling through his chest of belongings from Skyworld.

Link stared in shock. “Um… anything I can do to help?” he asked, unsure if he would even get a response at the rate that items came crashing down to the floor. He figured that it was impossible for the Angel to hear him.

“No, thank you,” the cherub replied. “…Got it!” the boy declared, holding up a bottle filled with a clear liquid that seemed as luminescent as the youth’s white wings. “See you later, Link. I’m off to help Ike’s friend and make Ike happy again!”
