2 Weeks before Halloween

Everything was dark.

But as Pit looked around he realized that he was in the room he shared with Ike. Through the silvery moonlight pouring in through their only window, the Angel could make out the sleeping form of his lover in their bed. The rest of their room was an obscure, black mass, but to the youth, it felt safe. He was together with his lover and that was all that mattered.

Outside, however, the wind howled and raged, creating a low moan followed by a high-pitched whine that sent chills down the boy’s spine.

Against his better judgment, the young cherub inched towards the window. He didn’t know why he would rather see the storm then crawl into his warm bed with Ike, but he felt something calling to him. Pleading with him to come closer.

The world outside seemed normal enough for the middle of the night. The shades of grey that comprised Peach’s garden were all in the right places. The front yard was a dark shade of silver and the old oak tree was a swirling black mass as it was assaulted by the relentless wind. Leaves left in a scattering of black specks. Everything seemed normal.

Except for the curtain.

Set like a curtain in a theater, a two story tall, seemingly endless white sheet hung just off the property line of the Mansion. Completely opaque and obscuring the forest to the north, the cloth hung there with nothing to suspend it. Ironically, this wasn’t what bothered the Angel; he could deal with the hovering.

But he hated that no matter how hard the wind blew, the curtain never stirred. It merely hung there, frozen in time and space, acting more as a barrier, or a soft wall.

A wall between what? Pit wondered.

“You gotta be shitting me! Never?!”

Pit shook his head. “No, I’ve never heard of Halloween. What is it?”

Roy leaned back in his chair and grinned. “Only the best holiday ever! You get to dress up like spooky shit and prank people to get candy!”

“Isn’t that illegal?”

The young noble shrugged. “On Halloween, it isn’t.

Marth sighed and looked up from his book, “Sure, Roy… Wait, isn’t that the reason you got arrested last year?”

Link laughed at the memory. “I recall it had something to do with indecent exposure.”

The red head scowled. “Not my fault that Peach doesn’t know what to do with a real man when she sees one.”

While Marth threatened to pummel his lover, Link looked over at Pit. “Anyways, there’s more to Halloween than just the aspect of dressing up. Some believe that the day is also magical or… spiritual I guess is a better word for it.”

The young Angel cocked his head. “Spiritual? You mean demons and angels?”

“The devil rises to steal your soul!” Roy shouted dramatically, rocking back dangerously far in his chair.

“Roy,” Marth sighed, his vision beginning to blur as his migraine set in.

Link cleared his throat. “Some believe that on Halloween, mischievous spirits come to their house to play pranks on them. Back then, people would put out offerings for the spirits to leave their house alone, so when you dress up like a spirit or a spook, people give you candy in exchange for you to peacefully leave.”

Pit nodded. “So that’s why we have Halloween?”

Ike entered the room. “That’s a part of today’s holiday, but some still believe that there is more to it than just mischievous spirits. Some believe that the barriers between our world and the next weaken on Hallow’s Eve, and those who have moved on can rejoin those they left behind for one night.”

The Angel looked up at his lover, concerned by his saddened tone. “Ikus?”

The bluenette smiled. “But I have you, sweet Angel, to keep me company.”

The cherub raced over and hugged his mercenary. “You’ll always have me, Ikus! I’ll protect you from the tricky spirits!”

The swordsman returned the hug and kissed the Angel’s sweet lips. “Thank you, baby… I’m so glad I met you.”

“Yeah,” Roy chimed. “Wish we could all meet the love of our life at this tournament.”

Marth elbowed his lover sharply in the side.
