Parting The Veil

2 Days before Halloween

There was the low hiss of leaves tumbling across the yard. The black leafless branches of the old oak tree reached up for the moon like bony fingers and swayed from the force of the wind. For the first time, the Angel stood on the front porch and eyed the daunting ghost-like cloth that hung across the field. It was thin now, only a white haze, and the figures on the other side were clearer than ever.

Standing directly in front of the cherub was the shadow, only now, it seemed more solid, though no less terrifying. It's form still billowed, though the brunette could see that it was a cloak fluttering in the ruthless wind.

However, once the Angel walked down to the oak tree, he could see that the figure wasn't solid shadow. Long wisps of ebony hair caught in the wind and blew across the phantom's porcelain face. The haze of the curtain made it hard to distinguish details, but he could tell that it had a ghastly white face framed by long, black hair. The face was solid porcelain; no dark spots to indicate eyes, nose, or a mouth. The body was black clad, as was evident by the billowing cape.

Pit shuddered as he realized that he and the ghost stood the same height.

Who are you? the cherub wondered.

That's the wrong question.

The answer was as loud in Pit's mind as his own thoughts, though the voice that said it was cold and dry.

Wh… Who were you?

Better. You're starting to understand.

The Angel shivered. Even though there was no malice in the voice, it chilled the youth to the bone just listening to it.

You're gone?

Unfortunately.

Then where am I?

Where you've always been, though the wall between our worlds is thinning. Soon, the veil will part.

Pit watched as two red spots appeared where the eyes should be on the figure's face. The Angel began to shake. Wh-What do you want?

I already told you.

The cherub's heart sank as he thought of his sleeping lover anywhere near the creature beyond the veil. You can't have him!

The figure chuckled softly, fixing the youth with it's blood-red eyes. He's already mine.

"AH-HA-HAHAHA-HA!"

Pit yelped and ducked into Ike's embrace while the bluenette glared at Roy.

"I swear, if you upset my Angel one more time, I'll tear your nuts off!"

The red head removed the mask, laughing. "Dude, c'mon! I was just teasing!"

"I wouldn't doubt that you're the reason Pit's been having all of these nightmares. It's his first Halloween, and if he doesn't enjoy it, so help me…"

"I got it! I got it! No more mask," Roy mumbled, removing the cheap, rubber mask and scooting away from the angry mercenary.

Pit stared, wide-eyed and shaking at the mask. It had a skeletal-white face with gaping, bloody wounds where the eyes should have been.

Ike followed his lover's gaze and scowled. "If I ever see that mask again, I'll shove it so far up your ass, it'll never see the light of day again.

The young noble took the hint and collected the mask before racing off. The mercenary smiled and rubbed the spot between the Angel's wings. "All gone, baby. Better?"

Pit nodded and hugged the bluenette tightly. "Yes! Thank you so much, Ikus! I love you! Promise you'll always stay with me!"

The mercenary chuckled and kissed his lover on the lips, stroking back the cherub's chocolate locks. "Of course, baby. I'm not leaving, sweet Angel. I love you."

Comforted, Pit fluffed his wings and hugged the mercenary tight. "Mmmm…"

"Want to try on your costume, baby?"

The cherub danced. "Oh, yes! I want to show you!"

"You'll look so cute," Ike cooed, kissing the youth again on the cheek.

Pit laughed and raced to get to their room first, his nightmare temporarily forgotten.
