The day before Halloween

Pit jumped awake, shaking from his recurring nightmare. Shuddering and disoriented, he looked around and found that he was safe in his bed. This did little to soothe him, as Ike was nowhere to be found.

"Ikus!" he called frantically.

There was a loud crash followed by the bathroom door opening, revealing Ike in nothing more than a towel. "Baby? What's the matter? Did you have a scary dream?"

The Angel nodded. "I did, and when I woke up, I couldn't find you!"

The bluenette sat down on the bed and held his lover close. "I'm so sorry, my Angel. I hate that this holiday is so terrifying for you. I hate seeing you so scared."

The brunette whined. "I just don't want to lose you! I'm so scared that-!"

"Shhh, baby. It's okay; I'm right here and I'm not going anywhere."

Pit nodded and continued to hang on to the mercenary. After a moment of shared heat, the Angel's confidence began to return as vivid scenes from his nightmare faded. Standing on his knees, the youth gave his lover a kiss on the lips. "Good morning, Ikus!"

The bluenette smiled. "There's my baby."

The Angel watched as his lover had a private talk with Marth. Judging by the quick glances the Prince kept sparing him, Pit assumed that he was the topic of interest. Or more so, his nightmares.

The cherub enjoyed the bright colors as well as the prospect of dressing up. It was his dreams that were upsetting him. The dark-haired youth who wanted to steal Ike away. The thought of the red-eyed phantom sent chills down the brunette's spine. Why my Ikus?

"Baby?" Ike called softly, rousing the Angel from his musings.

"Yes, lover?"

The bluenette approached the Angel and sat in the plush chair the youth was sitting in. "If… this is all a bit too much for you, we don't have to do anything tomorrow. We can just sit in our room and watch a funny movie," he offered, pulling the youth into a gentle hug.

"Ikus… This is a holiday. I can stick it out for you… it's just some nightmares; I've faced worse," the Angel stated, though it sounded like he was trying to convince himself as well.

Ike eyed the youth carefully, his gaze held only love and concern for the cherub. "I don't like that you're so bothered. This holiday is supposed to be fun, and so far, you've been miserable."

Pit forced a smile. "Like you said, they're just dreams, and they can't hurt me. I can deal with them and have fun with you. I want to dress up, Ikus. Please?"

"Yeah, c'mon! It's his first Halloween!" Roy pleaded on the Angel's behalf.

Ike sighed, outnumbered. "Okay, love, but you need to let me know if it's too much," he whispered and softly kissed the Angel's lips. "… And Roy, if you scare him, then goddess have mercy on your soul."

"Well it's be hard NOT to scare him, since I'll be dressed as Marth," the red head laughed.

The Prince rolled his eyes and walked away.

Pit looked up at Ike. "I like our costumes better."

The mercenary chuckled. "Me too, baby."

The young Angel watched as shadows of leaves danced by the window in the moonlight. He desperately didn't want to see the curtain, but he was more afraid of what would happen if he didn't. He left the safety of the mansion, venturing out onto the front porch, where his mostly bare body was quickly assaulted by the wind.

The veil was only a thin implication now, and the other side could easily be seen. However, Pit found it hard to describe the world beyond. It was so similar to the mortal world, yet there was something frighteningly foreign about it.

The phantom that had been haunting the youth for a month, remained up front and center on the other side of the veil, waiting. Pit didn't have to see him up close to know that his crimson eyes were locked on him.

With horrible suddenness, the wind ceased, dropping the leaves straight to the ground. The world went eerily silent for one whole minute. Then, as if a signal had been given, the veil split from the top down, like the opening of a theatrical production; one the young cherub had a front row seat two. The Angel watched with sick horror as the phantom stepped into his world.

As the crimson-eyed ghost made its way across the lawn, Pit turned on his heels and fled inside the mansion. He tried to lock the door, but he was shaking so badly that he couldn't find the coordination to turn the lock. Alone and unarmed, he didn't like the odds and decided to retreat to his room for back up. He ran for the main staircase and flew up the steps, taking two at a time.

Goddess, please! Someone help me! He's going to get me! the Angel called, as he reached the first landing.

A shadow appeared on the wall behind him as the phantom opened the front door, the moonlight lengthening the dark youth's shadow to where it engulfed the terrified Angel. They can't hear you, Pit, the cool voice chuckled. No one can save you now.

Putting on an extra burst of speed, the young swordsman cleared the last five steps and sprinted down the hall to his bedroom. The halls were eerily silent, and the shadow-phantom could be anywhere. Pit's stomach twisted at the thought of the thing grabbing him from behind. Once he reached his bedroom door, he yanked it open and shut it as quietly as he could behind him, hoping that the ghost wouldn't know which room to look in.

Ike! he called to the large lump in the bed. Help me! He's coming after me! the youth pleaded, but his lover remained motionless. IKE! he cried, rushing over to the bed. He tried to rock the large mercenary, but he couldn't so much as budge the bluenette. This is only a nightmare. It has to be a nightmare!

Pit's heart jumped into his throat when he heard the doorknob to their bedroom rattle before slowly turning. With a frightened squeak, the boy retreated into the covers. Ike's heavy breathing dominated the soft cave, but the Angel still heard the door ease open. Afraid to breathe, the brunette peaked out of a small hole in his blanketed haven, though he could only see the window that faced the veil. On the other side of the room, he heard the dark presence shut the door behind itself.

Soft footfalls mixed with Ike's light snoring as the thing grew closer. Pit prayed that his pounding heart wouldn't give him away. A shadow eclipsed the Angel's view of the window and the boy closed his eyes in panic.

A chill filled his warm cavern. Pit internally begged Palutena to rescue him from this demon.

His last thought went to Ike as the thing's icy hand closed around his throat.
