Description The days seemed to blend in with one another. Ugo was off with his Ma for hunting lessons and Papa was asleep snuggled within his own feathers while Sumitra was huddled under his wings for warmth from the nipping autumn breeze. Vito stared at himself dumbfounded in the calmness of the Glass Pool, a small section of water in the depths of a tiny cave off the coast of Island Luminous. Home base wasn't too far from the shore of the island and only owls who wish to open their minds and hearts came to this puddle of stillness. The Glass Pool was like ice frozen in time, it rarely rippled unless you touched its surface of wisdom.
His body was as tranquil as the pool itself, only moving when ex and inhaling. His eyes were soft yet fierce with questions and thoughts. It was the second time looking at his handsome reflection in water's surface. His fluffy head crest had disappeared over time, and, now looking in this motionless mere he didn't even believe it was himself. Instead, father looked up at him. But he wasn't content though. The more he saw himself the more he disappeared into a scared, puzzled owlet. It was no longer his Pa looking into his silver eyes. It was just Vito, just an owlet, worried, frightened and defenceless. Yet it was his heart to tell him he wanted to be brave and leader one day, but that one nagging feeling always whirled in his stomach. What about hibernation, and the ugly beings? It was the first time before the incident with the wolves when he truly worried about the strange creatures that toward over wolves and maybe even bears. But how? How could an ugly, flabby, featherless creature like that out smart and out rank a predator such as a wolf, fierce and strong. But these beings quickly took down this alpha, no problem at all. But how? He would always wonder. How?
There was only darkness in the cave of the Glass Pool. The only light was from lichen and glow worms that made home on the crystal walls and ceiling. The floor was unique as well. As if his feet were the switches, the floor glowed a pale, eerie blue light. It was Touch-Lichen, the rarest of its kind. Touch-Lichen was only found in the cave of the Glass Pool. But in Echo's home of the Twilight Palace in a far, beautiful land, Touch-Lichen grew almost anywhere, and as Vito imagined living in such a place like the Twilight Palace he wondered what books were.
It was very strange to think of books in the Twilight Palace, but that is what indeed he thought of. After his visit with the foxes, Cha-Cha, Rico, Mumbo and Bay-ba, he thought massively about books, reading, writing and drawing, especially about what they were and why such thing as a Knight-eye would need such skills. Maybe his new mammal friends could teach him, and perhaps he will fly to the Twilight Palace himself and meet Echo first talon.
He peered deeply into his eyes and blinked. There was something strange about his eyes, but he could see anything now. He gazed deeply into the pool, propping himself back up straight before falling into the frozen, ripple less water. His eyes seemed strange in a way he could not explain. It was as though a rainbow shifted from colour to colour in his silver specks. It was an unusual sight and he stumbled back falling on his tail feathers in a large amount of velvety like Touch-Lichen, glowing brightly as he plonk onto it. Was this why Phoenix had said he was born from Basilisk instead of Echo? Is this why he was so intrigued in reading and writing and these Knight-eye owls? Or was this just a trick of the mind? He had to look again, to know the truth.
He slowly picked himself up and carefully waddled toward the Glass Pool's edge gazing into its dead on reflection of himself. He watched his eyes until he could no longer blink. As he looked he gasped, his eyes looked as though tiny clouds of colour passed over them and rounded a circle retracing their steps turning from red to purple and yellow to green then blue. It was like gazing a rainbow in the eyeball. He was mesmerized before a soft voice like the mist's whisper from a waterfall's bottom crept through the air and melted inside his ear holes. He rotated his head from his rainbow eyes to see Aqua, as radiant as the morning sun, float from the yonder like an angel sent from the Twilight Palace.
She ruffled her feathers and preened herself before scrolling over to her friend. She smiled most beautifully and then said, "Amazing, isn't it? Almost looking like glass itself yet liquid is its surface, never freezing over to disturb the magnificent position of the water. As if it was made by Echo herself; to give us a little bit of magic on this dull, old island. But it is truly amazing, don't you think?"
Vito didn't respond. He was transfixed in the majesty of his rainbow shifting eyes to answer Aqua's questions. He was silent and did not move. Aqua began to worry and nudged his head with her beak. He shifted and turned to his friend.
"I'm sorry," he apologized as soft as the Touch-Lichen under his talons. One which had a scar of where once was a sliver. It was white and ruined his talons darkness, but he won't be able to get used to them without the scar of his bravery saving his little brother's life. "My mind is a whirlpool tonight," he paused, "Aqua?" She looked in his bewildered eyes. Surely he was fantasizing about something? She thought to herself. "Is there something strange to you in my eyes?" he asked.
She was stunned, yet mesmerised about the sense of greatness and wisdom in his words. But even though it didn't seem like there was, she could feel it rumble within her soul. She gazed within each eye, yet found nothing within her sights, but a feeling of there something still being there she had missed. She looked again, but like the last time she found nothing but a notion of there still being something there urged her to look again and again. But each time, nothing but a feeling deep within her gullet.
"Sorry Vito, I can't find anything," she told him. He was disappointed that only he could see the beautiful colours switch from green to yellow then red to blue. How could she not view the amazing shifts he could see in the pool's reflection?
Then it dawned on him. The pool could make her see. He leaned over the edge and without looking up he said, "Look at the reflection of my eyes and tell me you do see my eyes change from blue to green to red then purple and orange to yellow to blue. If not we can go home and you may call me crazy." He stated proudly and without hesitation. She looked at his bent position then did as she was told.
Bending over the still water she gazed deeply into Vito's reflection. She gasped and Vito knew she saw it now. He wasn't crazy! "Your, your eyes, they, they change colour like misty rainbow clouds passing over the sky! It's so beautiful Vito, it truly is amazing to look upon, please let me look one more minute!" she peeped up excitedly. Vito was happy and pleased he wasn't the only owl to see. Maybe there were more like him with beautiful changing eyes.
